Hurricane Sandy Coming Together Airs Tonight at 8p e/p - Learn How to Help
11/02/2012
There’s no doubt about it. Hurricane Sandy stopped the nation in its tracks. If we weren’t weathering out the devastating wind and water, then we were glued to the television hoping to see the Eastern Seaboard pull through.
A few days later and we are still seeing images of unthinkable devastation and loss as millions still struggle to find food, clean water and power. Cleaning up after this storm isn’t a project for the short haul – people are suffering and need any help that those of us who were more fortunate can spare.
Tonight at 8p e/p Velocity is proud to be airing NBC’s Hurricane Sandy Coming Together Benefit. Hosted by NBC Today anchor Matt Lauer, the telethon will be broadcast live from the New York studios of NBC at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and will feature performances from Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting, as well as appearances from Jimmy Fallon, Brian Williams and more.
In addition to enjoying the star-studded line up we hope you’ll take a moment to find a way to donate. You’ll find information on air on donations – or simply go to the American Red Cross website.
We know times are tough, but remember there are other ways of donating whether it’s time, blood or clothing – the staffers at the American Red Cross can help.
A sincere thank you from the team at Velocity!

Wow, what a blog! I mean, you just have so much guts to go ahead and tell it like it is. Youre what blogging needs, an open minded superhero who isnt afraid to tell it like it is.

I am writing to all car guys who do car stuff- i know nothing about classic cars but i do know that my billy is one of these guys who loves cars and he loves his tbirds he needs your help desperately PLEASE HELP ME HELP HIM! xo
Let me begin by telling you my story: I am a victim of Sandy, my home and my fiancé’s home and biz have been destroyed, (he is a boat mechanic). One word Heartbreaking. I think what is worse for my Billy is his beloved cars, he lost a 58 t-bird and a 67 t-bird, he has loved t-birds his whole live, let me change that "obsessed" with t-birds is more like it- he had tons of model cars from his childhood of the t-birds, books etc, as well as, some other really unique cars. He got his 67 t-bird when he was 14 years old and yes drove it without having a license, his parents would let him take it just to the end of our avenue and back that was in 1974. Many years later he placed his trust into what he thought was a reputable person to have some work done on his brown 67 t-bird. The car was stolen in 1989. I can’t begin to tell you the pain he suffered, you being a car man i would imagine you understand. Years later his Mother, god rest her soul (past away in September 2011) took 3 years to locate the same car in Oregon 2001, but in light blue, but who cares it was a 67 Thunderbird and he could not have been happier- thank god a replacement for the one that ad been taken from him. Billy Flew to meet the owners "the original owner" and spent a wk with the family proving to them that he was the right man to buy this car, it was not an easy sell, the man as i stated was the original owner and had given the car to his son (his only son) who was up there in years and they wanted to find the perfect fit and they did. Billy for years has corresponded with the family, the original owner has since past and the son is not far behind from what we are told. Fast forward to a year ago- we got engaged after both being single for many years (yeah me) He is truly my dream person- you can’t possibly love another human being as much as I do him. I prayed for god to bring him to me, trust me he is a remarkable man; he is filled with such kindness such thoughtfulness. During this terrible disaster and even after he has lost everything he is still out there everyday helping everyone- the boat yard had tons of boats up on land and he was getting gas and giving it to people, not a dime did he make, helping people drag garbage out- standing on the food lines to bring people food, getting blankets etc. The man across the street from him quite old, has no leg and Billy made sure a plumber got to him to rig his hot water heater so the man could take a shower, Billy got an inverter and plugged it into his truck to make sure that Mr McDonough had light. Sorry I digressed, we got engaged, had a party, booked the hall and his beloved Thunderbirds, as well as, 2 other cars 85 eldorado convertible and a 67 impala were all part of our wedding party, (Gerritsen Beach is big on their classic cars) wait let me add insult to injury the wedding hall Gargiulos Restaurant in Coney Island was also destroyed by Sandy, over 4ft of Sand inside the building. We will survive this natural disaster but the loss of the cars the wedding hall everything is just an insult. Had we have been told to evacuate we would have and god knows we would have carried those cars out of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, but only Zone A was told to leave, we "were zone B" we have since been changed to Zone A. During the surge 12 minutes before I personally evacuated with my 77 year old mother who has dementia and my Pug (Bear claw). Billy went back to his house to move his 2 cats to the attic, one of which he just inherited from his moms passing and grab his 19yr old Mini pine who has cancer (Lucy) and was sort of floating in the sea water/sewage. He could barely get his truck out the surge was so fast and so powerful and he had no choice but to abandon the Thunderbirds. We came back at 2am to find water in our homes still and the cars. Next day was chaotic as I am sure you can imagine.. Get the insurance companies on the phone for your homes, cars business, get fema, (who by the way denied him any assistance) all this is happening and my Billy is throwing out his memories/possessions and helping me with mine, gutting his home and mine and trying to save these beautiful cars- the cars he has had his whole life the cars I was to get married in to my dream man. It is so hard to let so much go the homes filled with memories, the pictures etc. Furniture, appliances can all be replaced the cars cant, I can only tell you from my heart that he is devastated. The 58 he has had also for a gazillion years, also bought from an elderly gentlemen who had never had the car out in the rain, neither has my Billy. I prayed that the day we were to get married (winter wedding) it did not snow because I know that car, the car I am to go to church in would not be coming out for the event. So I am writing this to you with hope that you can find it in your heart to help my Billy, I know your a busy man and I realize this may not be on your top 10 list but this is on my top 1 list. This man I am telling you about is a wonderful, giving man who deserves a break - he loves classic cars- there is not a thing he cant tell you about his cars NOT ONE THING. He is a phenomenal human being I beg you please find a way to help this big hearted man. We have been thru so much; we have given up so much. PLEASE help him restore his cars Please. I know I might be asking too much of you and who am I to ask? I am a person who loves another person more than anyone can love one human being- if he was gasping for air i would give him my last breath because the world needs individuals like him.. Please find it in your heart to restore his beloved Thunderbirds
Best to you and your family
Mandy M Ripley.
