The Ariel Atom vs. The Radical. Which Would Speed Racer Choose?
The Fifth Gear team are putting two specialty racers to the test at Anglesey – the Ariel Atom vs. The Radical. I’m going to be straight with you and admit these were two cars I didn’t even know existed, but when I look at them both I can’t help but think of Speed Racer going head to head with Racer X.
They are high end, wicked fast open race-cars that are available for anyone to purchase. Well, you have to have some money saved up, but the point is these are track worthy racers that you don’t have to be a race driver to buy.

The Ariel Atom sports a Honda 2.4 liter engine and can rocket from 0 to 60mph in 2.9 seconds. The Radical SR8 is powered by a high-revving, 380bhp Powertec RPV8 engine that holds several circuit records.

Both cars are “open.” That means no roof or doors as you hit some serious speed. I don’t even know if that means they are street legal, but both companies report enough people have purchased them that they must be driving them somewhere.
So, which car would Speed Racer choose? Naturally he’d choose the car the Fifth Gear experts give the thumbs up to. Now, we’d never give away which car came out on top, but you can see them put to the test on Fifth Gear Wednesday 12/12 at 10p E/P.
And don’t worry there’s always a lot packed into a Fifth Gear episode. The team will have a drifting challenge (sneak peek below!), Vicki heads to a millionaires motor show in Monaco and we’ll learn about what are the safest second hand cars.
Enjoy a preview below and we’ll see you tonight at 10p E/P for some Fifth Gear fun!
