The 9 Most Expensive Celebrity Weddings
Weddings are a big deal in our culture -- and celebrity weddings are the biggest of the big. Some stars have no problem spending hundreds of thousands -- even millions -- on commemorating their love. But it's clear that spending lavishly on a wedding ceremony won't necessarily save you from a rocky marriage. Several of the big spenders on this list went through equally expensive divorces.
Kate Middleton and Prince William -- When Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011, it had to be a wedding befitting of royalty. So no wonder the wedding cost a cool $34 million. One of the biggest royal wedding expenditures? $800,000 in flowers. But nothing tops the millions in British taxpayers dollars for extra police protection and security during the festivities.
Liza Minelli and David Gest -- Liza Minelli isn't known for being, uh, subtle, so it's no surprise that when Liza decided to get married it would be big. Liza and her beau David Gest spared no expense at their $4.2 million dollar wedding -- and invited more than 1,000 guests to the event. Tony Benneett provided the entertainment and guests included Lauren Bacall, Mia Farrow and Diana Ross. But alas, the union wasn't meant to be. The couple split up just one year later.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills -- If you're a part of the biggest band in history, you're deserving of a big wedding. When Paul McCartney wed model and activist Heather Mills in 2002, the couple spent a whopping $4.2 million on their nuptials. McCartney and Mills rented out a castle (!) in Ireland and treated guests to a luxury yacht ride after the ceremony. But the $4.2 million spent on the wedding pales in comparison to the millions the pair spent on their acrimonious divorce just 6 years later.
Salma Hayek and François-Henri Pinault -- When Salma Hayek married French bazillionaire François-Henri Pinault in 2009, the couple spent a whopping $3.5 million on the nuptials. The couple hosted a carnival-themed masked ball and enjoyed a performance by Bono at the reception.
Elton John and David Furnish -- And speaking of Elton, Elton John and his longtime partner David Furnish spent a whopping $1.5 million on their 2005 wedding. The pair invited 600 of their closest friends to the bash, which was held at the couple's Windsor mansion. And because he's crooned at so many other major weddings, it only makes sense that he'd serenade his husband at his own nuptials, too.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes -- By now, we all know what's become of this union, but oh, the jumping-on-the-couch ecstasy of it all. The top Scientologist married Holmes in 2006 at a 15th century Roman castle. Guests included Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, J. Lo and the Beckhams, who were probably pissed that the Cruise/Holmes wedding cost more than theirs. So what did the $2 million they spent on the wedding get them? How about a custom-designed Armani gown, and a five-tiered white chocolate cake. Annnnnd Cruise apparently serenaded his new bride with the song "You've Lost That Loving Feelings," which is, I don't know, kind of not romantic at all. But despite the huge expense, their love wasn't meant to last, and the couple split up in early 2012.
Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar -- Model/actress Elizabeth Hurley didn't want just one wedding day, so she went for eight. Shen she married Indian businessman Arun Nayer in 2007, the couple invited 300 guests to a special eight day festival in honor of the couple. And, they had two special ceremonies -- one in Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, UK, and another at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. The estimated cost for the whole shebang? Oh, just $2.5 million. And the couple split just three years later
David and Victoria Beckham -- Posh spice was just that -- posh -- at her 1999 $800,000 nuptials to soccer star and All Around Handsomest Man Ever David Beckham. Vicki Becks, as we like to call her, wore a silk gown with a 20-foot train and a matching diamond-encrusted crown. The wedding was small, compared to some of the others on this list, with only 250 guests. But those lucky 250 were treated to a special performance by Elton John. And fireworks. Yes, fireworks.
Chilliy Pasternak and Baby Hope Diamond -- You've probably never heard of these two, but with good reason; they're dogs. The female white Coton du Tulear married the poodle in July 2012 and claim the Guinness Book Of World Records for most expensive dog wedding, which cost $158,187. The services for the wedding were all donated, though -- including officiant Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- and it was all for a good cause. The "wedding" was a fundraiser for the Human Society of New York.
