BREAKING NEWS: SpaceX Falcon 1 slated for 7:30pm PST launch from Kwajalein Atoll. Streaming video.
Just in case you were feeling a bit disappointed by the fifth launch scrub of Endeavour, fear not! Like a quiet rocket-launching ninja, SpaceX has announced their Falcon 1 will blast off from the Kwajalein Atoll pad... today! This will be the first commercial launch after last August's failed Flight 3 that was carrying NASA satellites and other private commercial cargo. Of course, Flight 4 in September was far more successful, getting a dummy payload into orbit, sling-shotting SpaceX into the history books.
So, today, it looks like all is clear for the launch of the Malaysian Razaksat satellite... so get over to the live feed now and watch SpaceX get their first commercial payload into space. Go SpaceX!
From The Space Fellowship:
The Falcon 1 rocket is ready on the launch pad at Kwajalein for Flight 5. There are three satellites on board. The primary payload is the Malaysian RazakSat satellite. The RazakSat satellite was originally named MACSAT (Medium-Sized Aperture Camera Satellite). It was a joint development program between Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn.Bhd. of Malaysia and SaTReCi to develop and validate technologies for a Near Equatorial Orbit remote sensing mini-satellite system to acquire medium high-resolution images. Secondary payloads are two cube sats: InnoSat and CubeSat.
