Send Us Your Jupiter and Venus Pics!
December 01, 2008
Alan Dyer and Irene Klotz have astutely pointed out that Venus, Jupiter and the moon are set to glorify the night sky around sunset tonight (Monday, December 1st). By its looks, you might call the match-up a frowny face.
This will be an awesome sight to capture, so I'm opening the floor to you guys...
Send us your best picture with your name, location, a caption telling us about your photo, and any Web site link you prefer to DiscoverySpace@Discovery.com
If we get enough entries, I'll post the best ones in a new Discovery Space gallery this week!

*** Update - 6:00 p.m. ***
This is actually the THIRD time I have made this update -- TypePad keeps deciding to erase my updates overnight. so hopefully this one will stick.
Anywho, I took these two photos with a Nikon D70 out of my 5th-story apartment window in Queens, New York City. Had to stick my body halfway out the window to make the shots, so the stability wasn't great... aka, a little blurry and grainy. So I'm willing to bet your pics are better!
Speaking of which, I've received tons of images of this event from you guys, but I'd love to see some more. So keep 'em coming!

Nice pcts! thanks for sharing

Missed the actual occultation due to clouds, but it made for a nice after-the-sunset-time-lapse.

You're correct Charley -- best seats in the house are in Europe actually (get to seen Venus eclipsed by the moon).
I just snapped a few pics from my 5th-story apartment (in Queens, NYC). Will post them shortly!

Hmm, I read a little further. Evidently the event is over by ~1720 UT, meaning Europe and northwestern Africa are (I think) the only places you'll see the occultation. Elsewhere it will occur during daylight or after the moon and Venus have set.

I've already enjoyed Jupiter & Venus for the last 2 weeks; but tonight the bonus is the moon passing in front of Venus. http://spaceweather.com/
