Musk Oxen Valiantly Defend Their Calf from Wolves

03/21/2012

It’s sometimes hard to know who to root for in wildlife films.

On the one hand, if the predator doesn’t land its prey, it could face starvation or fail to feed its young. On the other, it’s hard to watch its victim struggle and lose. Sometimes, it’s best just to close your eyes and wait for the next polar bear cub play session.

Today, Discovery Channel is releasing a predation scene from the upcoming “Summer” episode of Frozen Planet, premiering this Sunday at 8PM e/p. In it, a pair of Arctic wolves take on a herd of musk oxen on Canada’s remote Ellesmere Island.

The wolves have newborn pups that are depending on this hunt, but the musk oxen are not about to lose one of their calves without a fight. Their epic struggle is reminiscent of “Battle at Kruger,” a YouTube phenomenon that hit the web almost five years ago and has since been viewed over 66 million times.

Fasten your seat belts, this gets bumpy. But you may like how it turns out, depending on who you root for.
