Houston Humane Society Rallies After Hurricane Ike

Our hearts all go out to the people in Houston affected by Hurricane Ike, and all the pets too! I spoke with my friends at The Houston Human Society (HHS) to hear all about what they have been doing to try to keep the pets safe and sound and back with their families.  Can you believe they were running on generators while they cared for almost 500 animals?

The HHS generally goes through 200 lbs of dog food a day and is currently using three times that amount to feed the homeless animals rescued! Before the storm, HHS was assisting Animal Control in Missouri City, Pasadena and La Porte to evacuate animals to safety. It was over a week of preparation and recovery, and the animals were still flooding in. Routine activity came to a halt such as spray/neutering and adoption services while the wellness clinic was overwhelmed with the care of the victims needing immediate attention.

HHS R.A.I.D.E.R.S (Rescuing Animals In Danger and Education Resources) is a group of Harris County Constables that went out to the areas of destruction to seek and assist any animals that were yet to be rescued. HHS is in desperate need of  towels and blankets for bedding, kitty litter and water.  They are doing so much for these cuddly creatures, and they need your help!
