Test-Driving the New Hybrids...On Your Camera
July 29, 2008
While poking around for a better alternative to the specially-marketed disposable "digital camera" batteries and weak rechargeables, I came across Sanyo's relatively new Eneloop batteries. These little numbers are hybrid nickel metal hydride cells, combining the best power that standard batteries offer with the longevity of rechargeables. According to Sanyo's website, the batteries can be recharged 1,000 times and will keep power for up to 12 months after one charge.
Even if the real performance is far less than that, it's still better than the way two dead batteries in my desk are performing. This week efficiency enthusiast Justin Thomas rated the top performing rechargeable batteries and chargers of the year over at MetaEfficient.com. More batteries that top out the list: Hybrio batteries from the French company Uniross and I-C3 batteries from Rayovac.
Happily for cheapos like myself, the new guard of rechargeables range don't cost much more than disposable batteries and pay for themselves quickly. They're also being sold by major retailers, including Amazon.com and Sears. Gamers should keep an eye out for better battery setups for Wii remotes, including a contactless recharger with an Eneloop battery pack that goes on sale in Japan next month. Score!
