NASA Newbies

April 09, 2009

NASA is looking at one radical way to put some spring into its step: mandating half of its new-hires be fresh out of school. The goal is to make sure the voice of experience isn’t lost as the agency’s aging workforce retires. Currently only about 16 percent of its workforce is under age 40.

How to attract younger hires without getting slapped with age-discrimination suits may sink the program, but it has the official blessings of the agency’s Strategic Management Council.

Thanks to NASA youngblood Nick Skytland for the call-out. Skytland may turn out to be the agency’s Luke Skywalker if he’s not buried by the bureaucracy.
