Alleged Hacker Tries the UFO Defense

March 17, 2009

Not quite sure what to make of this one, but in the interests of full disclosure, I’ll pass it along.

Apparently, an alleged computer hacker from the U.K. who is facing charges in the U.S. for poking his unauthorized nose into computers run by NASA and various branches of the military was seeking information about life beyond Earth.

Now, unlike the microbial variety that NASA is prepared to find on, say, Mars, for example, Gary McKinnon was interested in more advanced life forms, species that, well …. might have visited Earth. He claims he found UFO-related files in NASA’s computers. And he says it’s a cryin’ shame the U.S. gov is keeping this cool alien technology to itself instead of sharing it with the world.

He has a bit more pressing problem at the moment  -- fighting extradition to the United States, which wants to prosecute him for his electronic trespassings, which took place in  2001 and 2002.

The latest buzz about the case has to do with his new backer: former Beirut hostage-turned-human rights-advocate Terry Waite, who says the U.S. should be thankful McKinnon exposed its security lapses and drop the case.

If nothing else, you’ll learning something about choosing good passwords in this interview where McKinnon discusses how he did it.
