Phoenix is beginning a seven-minute dive through Mars atmosphere. It needs to slow down from 12,700 mph to 150 mph in the next seven minutes. A jet pack with 12 thruster rockets will brake the probe down to 5 mph and guide it gently to the planet's surface -- that's the plan anyway.
