Happy Birthday, Rome!
April 21, 2009
That’s right, it’s Rome’s 2,762 birthday today.
According to legend, the eternal city was founded on 21 April 753 B.C. The legend culminates with Romulus killing his twin brother Remus in a power struggle, thus becoming the first king of Rome.
Today anniversary celebrations include a procession with costumed soldiers and gladiators, museums opening their doors to the public free of charge, and a ‘she-wolf’ visual installation by American artist Kirsten Jones, which involves 50 silver wolves -- of course referring to the mythology of Rome’s foundation.
Eternally Cool has an interesting posting on the story of Rome’s foundation and good pictures showing a “chariot race” at the Circus Maximus.

Do you mean 21 April 753 B.C.E.? (I love your blog, by the way.)

oops! of course it was 753 B.C.E... a bad typo from my Italian thinking (in Italian it is 753 A.C., which means Before Christ)... I'm going to correct it right away... thanks for pointing it out!

Hi Rossella:
Re: Mona Lisa-like Painting
First, sorry I'm posting here, but I couldn't find a spot to respond to the story on MSNBC.com.
It's a joke, right? That is the most obviously altered image i've seen in a long time. If your contention is that it was a Da Vinci, oops.
