Iditarod, from below
While Jorge was hovering above the race in the 'copter, I grounded myself at the official start line on 4th and D in Downtown Anchorage. I have to say, after a week of "behind-the-scenes" stories, it was pretty cool to witness the culmination of it all -- to see the dogs and mushers I've met during my time here -- embark on their 1,100 mile journey across the Alaskan wilderness. I felt a connection. I also felt cold. Really cold.
A record 96 mushers entered this year's race. Each team took off from the start line in two minute intervals -- which made the Anchorage ceremonial start about three hours long. This wasn't the official start of the race, that's tomorrow 50 miles north in Wasilla. Because (they say, I disagree) Anchorage is too warm and there's not enough snow on the ground. So for today's event, they literally hauled in enough snow to get the race going.
I am going to end my last Alaska blog by saying something I've haven't said once yet in writing ( although Jorge has heard it too frequently).
AWWWWWWWWWWWWW, the PUPPIES!!!!
Here's some final shots of the the world's most amazing, enduring, loyal, strong, adorable, loving, inspiring animal that made the cold all worth it.
So much that I will be back next year.
Cheers,KD

Wohoo!

I grew up in Southeast Alaska. You should swing by the little Norweigan founded fishing town of Petersburg in May. From the 16th-18th we're celebrating "Mayfest" or "Little Norway Festival" which the town's calander year seems to revolve around. Vikings, seafood, games, pageants, parades. It's going to be sweet. ;-)

As a regulatory agency, FDA publishes rules that establish or modify the way it regulates foods, drugs, biologics, cosmetics, radiation-emitting electronic products, and medical devices--commodities close to the daily lives of all Americans. FDA rules have considerable impact on the nation's health, industries and economy. These rules are not created arbitrarily or in a vacuum. They are formed with the public's help.

For the record, the restart is in Willow, 70 miles north of Anchorage. You guys did a great job on this program. We are enjoying watching and are having dinner parties around the show. One of the mushers is among us. Keep up the good work. BTW...it was -10 here this morning...your morning in Anchorage was balmy! :)
