July 20, 1976: Seven years after men first walked on the moon, the Viking 1 spacecraft lands on Mars. Six weeks later Viking 2 follows suit and together they carry out the first scientific studies on the surface of another planet. They shoot 1,400 photos before Viking 2’s batteries die in 1980. Viking 1 hangs on until late 1982. See Viking 1’s photo gallery. And did the Viking landers find signs of life on Mars?

Its very difficult to find life on Mars now because whatever remaining life could have been destroyed by the consistent meteor bombardments over the 101
1,000,000 centuries.
