More Progress Through Beer
April 22, 1823: A London grocer named Robert Tyers receives a patent for an invention he calls volitos. They’re boots with five wheels in a single line across the bottom, the first version of inline skates. They brake but don’t turn so well, yet they gain popularity when they’re used by bar maids in cavernous German beer halls. See a schematic of Tyers’ volito. And listen to the official description of his invention.
