May 10, 1960: The nuclear submarine USS Triton surfaces off the coast of Delaware, completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth under water. Submerged for almost 61 days, the sub crossed the equator four times during its 41,400-mile voyage. It also managed to transfer a crewman with kidney stones to a boat on the surface.
