Record Longevity: 100 Year Old Finishes Marathon
10/23/2011
It’s not often that the last place finisher displays the most impressive performance. But no matter where 100 year old Fauja Singh placed in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, it was incredible none the less.
But in fact it’s Singh’s eighth marathon. Though he was born in 1911, he didn’t start running until age 89, according to NBC New York.
He says that avoiding smoking, drinking, and eating a vegetarian diet have helped him to live healthfully to such a ripe old age.
According to NBC New York:
Singh ran wearing his yellow turban and a matching T-shirt with the words " Sikhs in the City" emblazoned across the front. His time of 8:25.17 was more than six hours behind winner Kenneth Mungara of Kenya, who is 38.
He says that the key to completing his ten mile daily running regime is ginger curry and loads of tea.
"I have said it before: that I will carry on running, as it is keeping me alive," Singh told a marathon website.
