Young Love: Does Marrying Your High School Sweetheart Ever Work?

01/15/2013

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you had married the boy or girl you fell for in high school? While some may shake their heads and laugh at the thought, some people actually spend their lives with the person that stole their heart at a young age.

While there are very few statistics out about what percentage of marriages in the U.S. are between couples that have known each other since high school, there is strong data supporting the idea that marrying your high school sweetheart is not only uncommon, but very tough.

According to an article in Slate, those who get married in their teens have only a 54 percent chance of remaining married for 10 years.

This number does improve with time however, as data indicates that those married between the ages of 20 to 24 have a 69 percent chance of making it for more than a decade. And couples who wait until the age of 25 have a 78 percent chance of surviving.

The divorce rate these days is saddening, and unfortunately, sobering. According to an article in the Washington Post, marriage is at an all-time low due to a change in attitudes among the public in regards to the tradition. It’s unclear if the majority of marriages end in divorce, but the statistics indicate that the ratio is quite close.

Sound depressing?

Well, listen up. It is possible!

Against all odds, the undaunted, wildly in-love Mia and Rozonno McGhee of Discovery Fit & Health’s new show 6 Little McGhees met in high school, fell in love and married at the ripe ages of 18 and 19 years old.

The show is a wonderful and lighthearted mix of themes of love, community, hard-work and commitment, staring two people coming from rough backgrounds that found their best friend and soul mate in one another.

This couple knew immediately after getting together that they wanted to be parents. And as if you’re not moved enough by the magnetic attraction between the two already, it took Mia trying twice before she was able to get pregnant with her sextuplets. Mrs. McGhee suffered the tragic loss of her twins when she miscarried after her first pregnancy.

A little under a year later, the couple learned that Mia was pregnant and began preparing for an addition to the family, but didn’t know what to expect. A month after learning she was with child, McGhee and her crew of helpers began her path to prepare for not one, not two – but SIX new babies in the family!

Oh I said babies, right?
