I am NOT Josh Harris
07/07/2009
Welcome to the Bering Sea, located 2,553 miles north of Los Angeles, which I call home, and about 60 degrees colder. The Bering Sea is a slushy hell where I lived onboard the Cornelia Marie for 68 days in January and February 2009. Now that I am home safe and sound, relaxing on my couch as I watch the fruits of our labor, a couple of things strike me.
Watching the show, I see things that I definitely remember (big waves kicking my tush), but I also see things I don’t. When I was onboard the Cornelia Marie, I was aware there were other boats in the fleet, but you forget about them. We have little communication with the other boats; at times we talk via radio but not often. So when I watch the show, I am shocked to see other boats stuck in situations we found ourselves in. For instance, all the boats came into contact with the ice in one way or another. However, we were the first to go through it and it cost our engines dearly. As you know, we blew our piston and were stuck in St. Paul. I thought that the other boats would have known, but the ice is so unpredictable that no one could have guessed how fast it would have moved.
Also, I really appreciate the kind emails you guys send. However, I just wanted to let some of you know that I am NOT Josh Harris. I appreciate all the kind emails where you ladies think I’m that Josh and tell me how hot you think I am. However, you have the wrong Josh; I am Josh Silberman, and if you think I am hot, well, then thank you and you can still email me. However, if you want me to try and set you up with those “sexy” Harris boys, I just can't do that. Sorry. Haha! Anyway, let me end this blog with a haiku I wrote onboard the Cornelia Marie:
Snow dust dancing free
On the boat in the ocean
Never time to sleep

my daughter & I caught up with things over the 4th Deadliest Catch Marathon
Weekend..hours of entertainment,my question....during off season,what do
the captains do? my daughter says more fishing, I'm betting not. The winner gets "Catch" gear. Oh and to comment of the expense these vessels can rack up mechanically, that is no joke. I watched after the catch and remember one of the guys say it could be a thing as small as an o ring to a blown engine....$$ CHA CHING $$

Question, What kind of knot is used to tie the pots together while in storage on the boat as well as the knot used to tie the door shut while in the water? I seems like a 18" piece of rope is used. I has to be strong but quick to tie as well as to release especially when custed with ice.

Do you keep in touch with the guys from the CM? Are you going to be on the boat next season? Do they rotate producers?

I think Keith of thee Wizard is a coward He needs t go out there and do what he expects from thee Crew he wouldnt do it Because he is a Coward, and so is Skip Hansen The North western, He and his Brother like to provoke the Crew They need to an adjustment like a good old But Whipping they ever talk to me like that they wouldnt have any teeth,That Skip Is a punk Give me 10 seconds with him any I would knock him out, He is a, punk I think the Guys on the Cornelia & Time Bandit are good Guys they seem to have a heart and care about their employees,

Personally, I think Sig Hansen is hunk who looks like Bon Jovi.

Why are you tampering with a winning show. We are all addicted to the original Captains and crews such as the Northwestern and Cornelia Marie. Why add all these other new ships that no one cares about. We feel like the original boats have become members of our family. It always seems like when a show is a big hit the producers want to start making changes. Why was the Cash Cab guy the one to discuss the season ending with Captains instead of Mike Rowe. Please eliminate all the new boats that you have added and give us back the crews that we have come to love and admire. You are about to lose viewers.

Please give us more of the Northwestern. It is the most real and does not seem to play to the cameras as some of the others do. It seems like your aim would be to please your viewers!

Deadliest Catch is dead. Why program so much of the same show? Discovery should have other things to cover rather than runs and reruns hour after hour.

I too am wondering why Ben Bailey is doing After the Catch instead of Mike Rowe! I also am kinda curious about an episode I saw during a marathon weekend. It showed Keith of the Wizard running out of bait. Then it showed him calling Sig on the Northwestern. It showed Sig hearing the call, but it did not show him answering. Did he ever help Keith out?

Jose,
Why do you think Keith is a coward?

I've just spent many enjoyable minutes reading your blog and I want to say Thank You. Your blog gives us a look at the off-camera life on these boats we've grown to love. My question is: Is there a limit to the number of hours the captain will work the crew? Does the Deck Boss ever just say, "Hey Captain - we can't do it anymore"? Is there such a thing as "not humanly possible" on crab boats?
Thanks again for a great blog. I'll be back often!

I think you guys have a great show. What a lot of hard work just to please a lot of people that will pay for all the crab and lobster that is caught. Who would know how dangerous it is if this show hadn't been show to all of us. Great job guys...you are america's adventous.

I loved your blog and found it very interesting. My grandson and I have watched since the first season and still love it... and I guess even tho you have put in new ships that;s ok. As long as we still get our fill of The Cornelia Marie,Time Bandit and the Northwestern. Also we were wondering why Mike Rowe was not on After The Catch. Am glad to see that Phil is better and that Sig will see to himself during the off season. We'd like to thank these guys and their family's for sharing their lives with us. Have enjoyed each show (numerous times). Thanks Alicia

I think your awesome! The way you kept standing up even when you were knocked down and sick to death you kept going. That just shows how dedicated you are to what you do. I felt so bad for you when you tried all those treatments for sea sickness and they STILL did not work. Thank goodness you were able to tough it out and do a great job! I would kill for a chance to be on the show as a photographer. Your lucky it must have been AMAZING!! but anywho
I have no idea why some women email men from tv saying how hot they are or whatnot. I personally think it's pathetic because it isn't like they actually have a chance with these guys. I am sure they would rather find a woman who is interested in them as a person not interested in a face on tv. I would never waste my time on something so absurd and in my opinion immature. If you think someone is cute ok but behind their faces is a person with feelings and a beating heart how about liking someone for once for not what they do or because they are on tv but for who they are.. how about emailing these guys to say they do an awesome job or thank you for risking your life so we can all eat crab legs or how about be careful and wishing them good luck etc. Watch the show because you like the show not because you like a face on it.. just my 2 cents.

I think it should be Sig Handsome, not Hansen.

Considering how much nastier (and therefore more dangerous) the weather is during Opie season as compared to King season, I think we should boycott Opies (or snow crab as they're called here). The fishing is far more dangerous, and besides, there's no comparing how much better King crablegs taste. Snow crabs are just a lot of work for almost no meat. But Kings are truly a nectar of the gods! Try some if you don't believe me. I'm unbalanced, so don't comment to my posts, as I may come find you if I don't like what you say. Thank you.
