Form Meets Feline Function: ModKat Cat Litter Box
06/04/2009
Who says a litter box can’t embrace form as well as function, work with your décor and provide a private spot for your kitty to conduct their ‘bidness?’ Not the clever folks at ModProducts, designers of the new ModKat Cat Litter Box. Its simple, clean design can compliment any room, while the enclosed base and “rooftop access” can provide your cat the solitude and privacy needed to, uh, catch up on their celeb gossip mags.
Born from an obsession with the hideousness of their old, cheap, beige litter box juxtaposed amongst their carefully selected home décor, the designers over at ModProducts designed a innovative litter box that embodies a fresh approach to functionality.
A winner of the Editor’s Award for Best Accessory at The 2009 International Contemporary Furniture Fair recently held in New York City, the central idea behind the ModKat Litter Box is that your cat must jump up onto the roof to exit the litter box, which allows for all the litter kernels to fall off of their paws and through the perforated roof back into the container below, instead of all over your house. Brilliance!
Upon spotting the ModKat Litter Box, which resembles a cross between a modernist ice bucket, various Apple products and a creation of industrial design pioneer Dieter Rams, one of the first questions that entered my mind was: What of the lazy and fat cats? How will they possibly extract themselves from the litter hatch? Will they be stuck in there like a little bomb shelter?
According to the designers of the ModKat, "...if your cat loves jumping up on the windowsill or the arm of the couch and climbing into the sock drawer then your cat is cut out for the ModKat Litter Box. Tested on multiple breeds of various ages and unique personalities, all cats adapted to the ModKat without a hitch. Cats are naturally curious creatures and enjoy being atop and inside everything and ModKat was designed to appeal to these qualities."
Going green saves green
Available in fun and vibrant colors, the cat litter box measures 15" tall by 16” wide, and the innovative swivel rooftop swivels to clean and locks shut, keeping curious canines out of the latrine. The washable and durable, eco-friendly reusable liner eliminates the need for annoying, wasteful and expensive disposable liners.

I own a Modkat and it has a big design flaw that might not be apparent before using it:
The liner is mis-advertised. It is, sadly, not waterproof. The stitching at the seams allows liquids to soak through (I know this b/c my cat has peed in the corners and urine soaks through the outside of the liner. Very gross to clean, and smells if not cleaned quickly). In addition, the liner cannot be sanitized. I think sanitization is one of the primary criteria for the liner being re-usable, and this one doesn’t meet that criteria.
Another reason the liner is less than ideal from a design perspective is that it is not rigid. The floppiness of the liner makes it very messy and gross to clean. Another thing that makes the “re-usable liner” difficult to clean is that litter gets stuck in the seams (in addition to cat urine, see my first point about the stitching).
Currently I do not use the liner and this makes the box very awkward to clean because the box is unwieldly, and also because of a small lip inside the bottom that feces gets stuck in. If the liner were rigid, sanitizable and seamless this would not be a problem. Please consider these issues before you purchase this product.

Not a cat owner myself, but a friend of mine has one of these; they seem pretty freaking cool! Very nice, certainly better than the litter box my grandma used to have!
