Search Warrants Served in Case of Missing North Carolina Mother Kelly Morris

Kelly MorrisLast week I brought you the story of Kelly Currin Morris, a 28-year-old mother of two who went missing from her Stem, N.C., home on Sept. 3, 2008. It has now been revealed that police have obtained at least two search warrants in connection with the case; however, both warrants - one obtained on Sept. 12 and another on Sept. 16 - have been sealed under a judge's order.

The Granville County Sheriff's Department will not comment on the search warrants, so at this time it remains unclear whether they are connected to a towing business owned by Kelly's husband, 34-year-old William "Scott" Morris. Police recently named Morris a "person of interest" in his wife's disappearance and in the Sept. 4 arson fire that destroyed their home.

Investigators have said there is no evidence suggesting that Kelly was home at the time of the fire; nonetheless, her family and a small group of volunteers have spent the last two weeks sifting through the charred debris looking for any evidence in the case.

Kelly's mother, Wanda Hollis, recently hired a canine team from Burlington, N. C., to join the search. The dogs, trained to track specific scents, have been guided around the burned-out home and also through some nearby wooded areas. So far they have been unable to direct their handlers to Kelly's whereabouts.

Kelly MorrisDuring previous run-ins with the media, Wanda had little to say about the relationship between Kelly and her husband; however, during a recent interview with WRAL.com, she described the marriage as strained and said that her daughter had considered leaving Scott Morris.

"I am not well at all," Wanda said. "I have been going through this with Kelly and Scott for the last year - with the problems ... I felt like if she stayed, something would happen. If she were to leave, something was going to happen."

On Friday, more than 400 people showed up for a vigil at Creedmoor First Baptist Church to pray for Kelly. One of the people at the vigil was a longtime friend of Kelly's named Myra Wren. During an interview with NBC17.com, Myra said she recognized that Kelly and Scott were having marital problems; however, she said the problems were "nothing that would have made me think this would happen."

From Whispers to Roars - The Never Ending Saga of the Casey Anthony Case

September 22, 2008

Casey_anthonyA fiction writer would be hard pressed to come up with a storyline equal to that of the Casey Anthony case. I've covered countless cases during my career as a crime writer, and I can't recall a single case that has garnered such a circus-like atmosphere as this one.

There have been so many strange happenings in this case in recent days that I don't even know where to begin today's coverage.

When we last left off with this case, on September 15, Anthony was, once again, under arrest, this time on three charges unrelated to the disappearance of her missing three-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony.

Read the Arrest Affidavit

The newest charges against Anthony were based on allegations of check forgery, fraudulent use of identification, and petty theft - violations that investigators say occurred in mid-July, when Anthony allegedly wrote more than $650 in checks that were stolen from a friend's car.

Ap080821022466_coming_out_2Despite these most recent charges, Anthony was again released from custody last Tuesday on a $1,250 bond.

Following Anthony's release, her attorney, Jose Baez, briefly addressed the media, during which time he blasted the Orange County Sheriff's Office for its handling of the case.

"I think we are seeing the games that are being played," Baez said. "I am not intimidated in any way, shape or form. If the state of Florida wants to play these games and waste your tax dollars and your resources, that's for everyone to stand up for and complain about … If police can do this to her, they can do this to anyone."

That same day, Orange Circuit Court Judge Reginald Whitehead denied a request by the Chickasaw Oaks Phase Three Homeowners Association to keep both protesters and the media confined to an area near the back entrance of the subdivision. In making his ruling, Whitehead said the association did not follow Florida law, which requires them to give notice to the protesters.

AngryprotestersFollowing the hearing, members of the association handed out notices to the protesters and they posted them throughout the neighborhood. A second hearing is expected to take place sometime today or tomorrow.

Orange County Commissioner Mildred Fernandez is also upset by the growing activity in the neighborhood; she recently sent a memo to Mayor Crotty, requesting that the sheriff's office assign an officer to patrol the neighborhood.

"The volume of traffic generated by demonstrators and media is such that significant impact upon the neighborhood has occurred including incidents where school buses were unable to travel the roadway; normal garbage and trash collection could not occur because of the size of the vehicles that needed to be upon the street in front of the Anthony home, verbal and physical confrontations between demonstrators, deputy sheriff's and people coming to and from the Anthony household have escalated and interfere with normal neighborhood activities," she wrote.

Meanwhile, the protesters - who increasingly resemble guests from the Jerry Springer show - took their protest to a new low early Thursday morning when they crossed onto the Anthony's property and repeatedly banged on the garage door, all the while yelling hate-filled oaths at the family. The demonstration quickly escalated when protesters started throwing stones and coins at the house.

Remains Found In Georgia Woods Believed to be James "Booney" Wade

September 18, 2008

James_2Longtime readers of this blog will recall the case of James Daniel "Booney" Wade, a 28-year-old resident of Rome, Georgia, who went missing on December 25, 2007.

For the last nine months, Booney's family has held on to a desperate hope that he might still be alive. Unfortunately, that hope was somewhat diminished today, following an announcement by local police that Booney's wallet was found this afternoon alongside human skeletal remains in Coosa, Georgia.

"We understand that a young man was looking for his dog, and he was walking back in the woods when he discovered the body," Maj. Tommy Shiflett with the Floyd County Police Department told the Rome News-Tribune. "We don't have a definite confirmation yet [that it is Wade], so we are now waiting on a positive identification . . . Right now, we're just in a wait-and-see mode."

It is too early for investigators to comment on a possible cause of death. The state crime lab is in possession of the remains, which are currently being investigated so that the lab can make a positive identification.

According to family members, James Daniel "Booney" Wade was last seen on Christmas night 2007.

"Booney had been really depressed around the holidays because he didn't have money to buy his family, especially his daughter, Christmas presents," Booney's cousin, Jessica Coots, said in a January 2008 interview with Investigation Discovery.

Jessica said Booney had been feeling depressed because he was desperate to visit his 11-year-old daughter in Alabama. When he was unable to find a ride there, he told a friend, identified only as "Buddy," that he would make it there on his own. Booney was last seen at his friend's Woods Road residence on Christmas night.

Kelly Morris, Missing Mother of Two, May Have Been Murdered

September 17, 2008

Kelly MorrisWith much of the nation focused on Casey Anthony and her missing three-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony, little coverage has been devoted to an equally disturbing case - the disappearance of a missing mother of two from Stem, North Carolina.

On the morning of September 4, 2008, firefighters with the Stem and Providence fire departments responded to a house fire at 3220 Tump Wilkins Road. The house and much of its contents were destroyed; however, firefighters were able to determine that the residents, 34-year-old William Scott Morris and his wife, 28-year-old Kelly Currin Morris, were not home when the fire broke out.

William Morris was allegedly at his towing business in Creedmoor and the couple's two young children, ages 8 and 5, were in school at the time of the incident. It was initially believed that Kelly was in Raleigh, where she worked for Nationwide Insurance; however, investigators soon learned that she never showed up for work that morning.

Roughly two hours later, Kelly's car, a burgundy 2005 Honda Accord, North Carolina license plate TXP-5917, was found abandoned in an undeveloped subdivision, less than a mile from her home. Inside the locked car, investigators found Kelly's keys, purse, and cell phone.

When questioned by police, William Morris allegedly told them that he had not seen his wife since the previous night.

"He was the last person to see her alive on Wednesday night (Sept. 3) at their home," Granville Sheriff David Smith told NewsObserver.com. "She was allegedly going to find a pet dog that had got outside, we think, between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m."

According to Smith, the dog later showed up without her.

The Caylee Anthony Search With Florida 3 Airboat Search and Rescue

September 11, 2008

Florida 3 Airboat Search and RescueWhen I was in Florida working on the Casey Anthony case, I had an opportunity to interview Robert Dummett, Deputy Coordinator of Florida 3 Airboat Search and Rescue. During the interview, Robert explained FL- 3's role in the search effort and he shared his opinion on whether alligators could have destroyed potential evidence in the case.

David Lohr: "Would you explain what role you are playing in the search for missing three-year-old Caylee Anthony?"

Robert Dummett: "Airboat search and rescue was invited in by Texas EquuSearch to be a local resource for providing water search and if necessary transporting the K-9 units and handlers to areas that would otherwise be inaccessible and to provide transportation to searchers."

David Lohr: "What types of areas are you exploring and how easy is it for your boats to maneuver through those areas?"

Orlando SwampRobert Dummett: "There are areas that are surrounded by water today that were not wet at the time this incident occurred. Back in June, there was a lot of dry areas, which are now flooded because of tropical rains. There are areas that may be high ground, which would be islands that would otherwise be inaccessible. Our airboats can get to and from those areas pretty easy. Our boats do not have any movable or working parts under the waterline and are propelled by an aircraft style propeller. As a result, they are not hampered by lack of water. They can run down the pavement in this parking lot and they can run in 200 feet of water. We have been involved in searches for hunters where we have gone over beaver dams, downed trees and stumps, as opposed to conventional watercraft which are restricted to clean open water."

David Lohr: "Does the airboat handle differently on land, as opposed to water?"

Robert Dummett: "Does a motorcycle handle different on sand than it does on pavement?  Sure, the boat handles differently, but it takes the same operational skills."

David Lohr: "Regarding this specific search, for Caylee Anthony, what types of things are you looking for out there?

Robert Dummett: "In this mission, we are out there looking for anything that is unusual - anything that doesn't belong. We are looking for things such as blankets, sleeping bags and anything child related. It is very possible, if the child was put into a garbage bag, it could float.  Early on they were looking for a child safety seat that has since been recovered.  Not necessarily in this search effort, but law enforcement does have that in custody, so that has been excluded as an item we are looking for."

Criminal Profiler Says Casey Anthony is "Punishing Everyone"

Dr. Deborah Schurman-KauflinLast month, Dr. Deborah Schurman-Kauflin, President of the Violent Crimes Institute, LLC, shared her thoughts on Casey Anthony, mother of missing three-year-old Caylee Anthony.

Dr. Schurman-Kauflin recently got back from traveling and upon checking her inbox, she found dozens of emails from readers who want to know why Casey Anthony is not helping in the search for Caylee.

"She never wanted her baby and felt put upon to be a mother," Dr. Schurman-Kauflin told Investigation Discovery. "Often in situations like this, the mother is so self absorbed that the only way to get the mother to talk is to make everything about her. If you bring up Caylee, she will shut down. She is not interested. If a chronic liar who feels no remorse knows people need her, she is flush with power."

According to Dr. Schurman-Kauflin, Anthony is manipulating everyone, including the media.

"She knows everyone is waiting with baited breath to hear about Caylee, so she is punishing everyone by being silent. To her, it is unfair that people are more interested in Caylee than her, and she will punish investigators, her family, friends, and the public. Not cooperating and staying quiet is a way of 'getting even' for perceived wrongs. Remember, it is all about her, not Caylee. When you make it about Caylee, she will stop talking. You have seen that already. Right now, Casey is feeling hurt. Her pain is her priority. No one should make the mistake of wondering why she doesn't seem to care that her baby is gone. The truth is, one must look at this from Casey's perspective. She is free now. She thinks if she talks to police, that freedom could be taken away."

The Wacky World of Casey Anthony

September 10, 2008

Casey AnthonyWe've got bloggers stealing trash, Lee Anthony destroying protesters’ signs, and Casey Anthony giving high fives. It would seem there is no end to the lunacy surrounding the Caylee Anthony case.

Before we get into these most recent developments, I would like to point out one thing I've learned since my return from Florida, and that is the fact that the "breaking" news you're getting from Nancy and Gretta is not necessarily breaking.

I found it humorous the other night when Gretta's show announced the protester fight that took place in front of the Anthony home as "breaking" news, when in fact it had occurred two or three days prior. I had the video of the fight online within an hour or so of the occurrence.

Then you have Nancy on the television talking about this bone discovery, which is supposedly "breaking news." I knew about that before I left. The only reason I did not mention it was because a spokesperson for EquuSearch had already told me that they were 99.9 percent positive they were animal bones.

I also find it funny that everyone is now jumping on the bandwagon regarding the book and movie deals. That is rehashed news from last week.

What I am trying to say is, don't get overly excited by everything they call "breaking" news. More often that not, it is tabloid fodder.

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Goodbye Florida

September 08, 2008

I spent the majority of the day checking off a list of areas that I wanted to look at and photograph before leaving Florida. I am currently uploading those images, along with the ones that I took during the "Cyber Search." I was going to upload them here, but after giving it some more thought I decided that was not a very feasible thing to do. Instead, I am going to assemble them in a slide show later this week.

I will be flying out of Orlando tomorrow. Part of me is happy to be returning home, but another part of me wishes that things were different. I was hoping I would be here to see some major developments in the search for Caylee Anthony, but unfortunately that was not to be. This is not the end though and in the event of another major development I will do my best to get back to Florida, so that I can provide you with all the latest details.

I would like to personally thank Tim Miller and Texas EquuSearch for welcoming me into their family and I would also like to thank all you, my readers, for all of the well wishes and comments that were sent my way. I am thankful for each and every one of you and I hope that you will continue to use this site as a daily source for crime news.

Thanks!

David Lohr

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Day 3 Update

September 07, 2008

Help Find Caylee AnthonyIf you have been following my posts you are aware that I am in Orlando, Florida covering the search for Casey Anthony's missing daughter, three-year-old Caylee Anthony.

Earlier today, I gave my readers an opportunity to join in the search by recommending areas for me to explore. We had a great response and as I result I made it to a variety of different places. I have photos of each area I went to, which I plan on posting here sometime tomorrow.

EquuSearch TentI then went to the Texas EquuSearch command post and spoke with Tim Miller's wife, Georgeann Miller. She said that while they are both sad that the search had to be suspended, they are not giving up and will be back as soon as the waters recede. I asked when that might be and she estimated they would be back in about a month. In the mean time, they are going to continue the search for Natalee Holloway, a young woman who went missing in Aruba, on May 30, 2005.

After leaving the command post, which was a virtual ghost town, I went to the Anthony family home, where I found out about George's alleged assault on two protesters – a young man and an elderly woman. For more information about that and to watch video, please see my last post.

George Anthony Headed to Jail For Assaulting Protesters?

Little_girlGeorge Anthony, father of Casey Anthony and grandfather of missing three-year-old Caylee Anthony, freaked out on a group of protesters today and allegedly pushed two of them - a young man and an old lady - because they were standing in front of his house.

I was not on the scene when the argument occurred; however I did locate both victims of the alleged attack and they agreed to talk about it.

Watch the interviews here: http://www.youtube.com/user/crimewriter74. Please note that they contain coarse language, not intended for minors.

After I uploaded those videos a witness to the events sent me a link to video of the alleged assault. In the video you can see George push the male protester; however the camera does not get a very good shot of the alleged assault on the elderly woman. You can view that video here. As with the other two, it contains coarse language, not intended for minors.

As you can tell from the videos, both of the alleged victims are thinking about pressing charges.

In related news, the sheriff's department was on scene when I arrived, busy handing out tickets to anyone who drove by and honked the horn in front of the house. They were also giving tickets to motorists who were blocking the road.

I'll have more updates later, along with an entry about my activities from earlier today.

Caylee Anthony Search Suspended

CayleeanthonyI just spoke with Mandy Albritton, the search director for Texas EquuSearch, and she informed me that the search for Caylee Anthony has been temporarily suspended.

High waters have left many of the areas both unsearchable and unsafe for volunteers.

According to Mandy, the search will continue once the water recedes. At this time it remains unclear when that will happen.

I'll provide more details on this latest development later tonight.

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Cyber Search Update

So far I have been to Jay Blanchard Park and the Hidden Oaks School. I met up with an EquuSearch team behind the school and they were in the process of completing a thorough sweep of the area. The team leader informed me that divers are currently searching a number of lakes in the area.

Interestingly enough, I bumped into a journalist and photographer from the Orlando Sentinel who are, according to the reporter, "writing an article on from a searchers perspective." Interesting. Why didn't I think of that? Oh but wait... I did. lol. It's all good though. Anyone who lets the public know about this search is welcomed and I respect them for getting down and dirty with the rest of us.

At any rate, I will give more in-depth details later and will post photos of the areas I have been too. I will also update this particular post whenever I cross off a certain area.

In the mean time, please continue to post your suggestions, but remember: I need a PHYSICAL ADDRESS. Telling me to go to a location "three miles from her house" or something of that nature does not help me, as I have to rely on GPS.

For my own safety, I cannot say where I am going next but I will let you know as soon as I leave there.

Thanks for all the great suggestion and keep them coming!

UPDATE: 3:12 p.m. - I just left Sawgrass Appts. I located the dumpster and took photographs. I am now continuing on to another location. - BTW, does anyone have the name of the Tattoo business where Casey got her Tattoo? Also, can someone please post the addy for the club and for Amscot, where she left the car? Some of these are mentioned in the 400 pages of court documents. I have them with me but I do not have the time to read through them again right now. Thanks!

UPDATE: 4:33 p.m. - Thanks to everyone who has responded to my requests! I have since been to 232 Glenwood, 301 N.Hillside Drive and 7501 Colonial. I post more information on those locations later. Right now I am going to check out a few other places.

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Cyber Search

Dscn0818I am still on the scene in Orlando, Florida, helping look for Casey Anthony's missing daughter, three-year-old Caylee Anthony.

I have been receiving hundreds of emails from readers who are unable to get involved in the search, but who would like me to look at specific areas (Jay Blanchard Park) and to photograph specific places (location of the dumpster).

Given the fact that so many people are out looking again today, I have decided to devote the entire day to YOU.

I am going to start with Jay Blanchard Park, but from there I will go to wherever you send me. If you have a specific area where you want me to go, leave a comment at the bottom of this blog entery, along with the physical address for that location. While I have many of the addresses on my computer it will take me time to look them up. If you send a note saying "check such and such dumpster" that will not help me, as I am not from this area and have to rely on GPS. That being said, please take a moment to look up the address and include it in your post. Also, I obviously cannot explore large wooded areas by myself, so please keep your suggestions to areas which are feasible for me to look at or photograph.

I need the physical address for whichever location you send me to so that I can spend my time traveling there, rather than going through the time consuming task of looking it up myself.

Please note that comments here are moderated, so don't become concerned if yours does not go up the instant you post it. Whenever I leave a specific location, I will check back here to see where you want me to go next.

Texas EquuSearch has my cell phone number and they have promised to keep me informed of any breaks in the case.

Now is your chance to get involved!

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Day 2 Update 3

September 06, 2008

Volunteers_3All totaled, nearly 1,200 people showed up today to assist in the search for Caylee Anthony. That is a pretty amazing turnout, compared to the low numbers we were seeing last week.

One particular volunteer, a lady who is now answering phones in the command post, made my day when she said that this blog was the reason she came out to volunteer. I thought that was really great and I found it very touching.

In my last post, I informed you about the radio interview I was doing today with Shawn Wasson, host of "The News Junkie" on 1290 WJNO. In case you did not catch it, I'll be posting a copy of it as soon as the station uploads it to their Web site. Shawn's a great guy and I always enjoy going on his show.

Anthony_house_02After the interview, I drove out to the Anthony's house. It is maybe five miles from the EquuSearch command post, so whenever I am in route I try to swing by there to see if anything is happening. There was supposed to be a rally there at 3:00 p.m. but when I arrived there, at about 3:15 p.m., nothing was happening.

I uploaded two new videos of neighbors discussing the case in front of the Anthony house. You can watch them here.

Search21When I left the Anthony house, I went to the command center and got involved with another search effort. I went out with a group of about 30 volunteers, to a wooded area next to Lee Vista Blvd. We canvassed the area pretty good but did not turn up anything of great interest. Like the previous searches, we found more bones but they too did not appear to be human. Nonetheless, we followed protocol and they were all flagged for closer inspection by a trained professional.

As I am sure you have already heard, the item that sheriff's deputies removed from George Anthony's vehicle was a handgun. This is the information that I wanted to share with you this morning, but at that point I could not find a credible source to verify it.

As an aside, you'll have to forgive me if I am not much of a wordsmith right now. I have been averaging about two hours of sleep a night and between that and dredging through the woods everyday, I am pretty exhausted right now. Regardless, I will continue the search and do my best to assist in any way possible, while at the same time giving you all the latest details.

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Day 2 Update

Command_centerI have a few minutes to spare, so I want to give you a quick update on what has been happening at the Texas EquuSearch command post.

I am happy to report that the volunteer effort has exploded today! I do not have an official count yet but I have personally seen hundreds (possibly a thousand or more) of people come out to join in the search. People from all over the country are here. Some volunteers have brought boats and ATV's, while others have showed up with backpacks and walking sticks.

I was unable to go out with the airboat search team, but I am hoping to catch up with them later today. Instead, I went along on a quick search of an area near Moss Park, not far from where my team went yesterday. We did not find anything of great interest, just some animal bones and empty beer cans. Parts of the area looked as though it was an active party spot, possible used by teenagers.

TimOne of the K9 handlers said that they would have an easier time during the search if Casey Anthony or her family would provide them with an item that would have Caylee Anthony's scent on it. According to the handler, an item was requested from the family but they have allegedly refused to provide one.

There have been a lot of rumors circulating today about items that were allegedly removed from George Anthony's vehicle. I have not been able to get any official verification, so for now I am not going to post any of those rumors. Instead, I will let you know when I am able to get a credible source to fill me in on the details.

Tim_2I have uploaded two new videos - of Tim Miller and Robert Dummett briefing a search team:

Watch Part 1 of the Briefing

Watch Part 2 of the Briefing

You'll notice in the second clip they state that people are not allowed to take cameras along on the searches. Please be aware that Tim Miller gave me exclusive permission to photograph the search effort.

In about an hour, I am going to talk about the case with Shawn Wasson, host of "The News Junkie" on 1290 WJNO. I'm not yet sure what time it will be broadcast. Last time we did a 2:00 p.m. interview and they broadcast it at 4:00 p.m. If I can, I'll let you know when I find out. Otherwise, I'll get a sound bite of it to post here later.

Search Following the interview I will get involved in another search.

As another FYI, ABC News has said they did not pay the Anthony family for their 20/20 interview. They have stated that it is "against their policy"; however they did tell Orlandosentinel.com that they licensed the home videos and photographs. Perhaps it's just me, but I fail to see the difference.

Also, please know that I read all of the comments posted to this blog. I do not have the time to personally respond to each and every one of them, but I am keeping up with what is being said and I do appreciate all of the well wishes everyone has been sending to both me and the other search members!

Be sure to check back later for another update.

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Day 2

It is about 7:00 a.m. and I just arrived on the scene at Texas EquuSearch's command post. It looks like there will be a large turnout of volunteers today, as dozens of cars have already started pulling into the parking lot. I'm happy to report that I have met several readers of this blog who have came out to volunteer, including one lady who made the drive all the way from Ohio.

I am out of the loop right now as far as what other outlets are covering; however sources here tell me that detectives removed potential evidence from George Anthony's vehicle early this morning. The evidence was allegedly removed from the wheel well, although some sources are saying the spare tire area. I'll try to provide more information on that later.

Robert Dummett, one of the search directors with Florida 3 Airboat Search and Rescue, has invited me out on one of their search boats today. I have a radio interview later this afternoon, so right now I am trying to see if I can work both things into my schedule. Regardless, I will be involved in the search effort at some point today.

I'll continue to provide updates as time permits.

Fight Night at Casey Anthony's House

Insane! That is the only way I know how to describe the scene outside the Anthony family home tonight.

I arrived at the residence at about 7:00 p.m. and joined the other members of the media who set up shop across the street from the house. The evening started out quiet but all that changed roughly an hour later when a group of angry protesters arrived on the scene.

The protesters, most of whom looked to be under the age of 18, stood in front of the Anthony family home and began chanting, err… screaming, "baby killer, baby killer, baby killer," over and over again.

The commotion angered some of the neighbors and a number of arguments quickly broke out. At one point an argument between one particularly angry neighbor and a protester turned violent and a fist fight broke out.

Following the fight, deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene and calmed down the noisy protesters and the growing crowd of angry neighbors.

At about 9:30 p.m., Casey Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, arrived at the home. He refused to speak with the media and walked into the house without saying a word.

I cannot say with 100 percent certainty that it was her; however someone with Casey Anthony's height, build and hair color peered out one of a window on two separate occasions while I was on the scene.

Things may get heated again tomorrow, as protesters are planning on holding another rally at 3:00 p.m.

I have a couple of other videos of interviews with local residents that I'll include here in another update.

I know I promised to fill you guys in on my interview with Robert Dummett, one of the search directors with Florida 3 Airboat Search and Rescue; however I don't have time to put it together right now. Instead, it will be up sometime tomorrow. I am running on 2 hours of sleep right now and I have to be up at 5:30 tomorrow to prepare for another day of searching.

Please continue to check back for updates!

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Day 1 Update

September 05, 2008

I apologize for the late update. Today's search took much longer than I had initially expected.

As I mentioned earlier today, Tim Miller assigned me to a team of 12 searches, to search a "high priority" area with a K9 team.

The area we searched was a dead end road near Moss Park. According to a spokesperson with EquuSearch, the area was deemed important by the Orange County Sherriff's Office. They declined to state the exact reason why the area was considered so important; however a search and rescue specialist told me that all of the high priority areas are based on either cell phone towers that pinged Casey Anthony's phone during the time Caylee went missing or areas where she was allegedly seen during that same timeframe.

The particular area we searched today was mostly swampy, with areas of loose sand and dense brush. Two dog handlers joined us in the search, one a cadaver dog and the other a K 9 that had been specifically trained to find bones

Shortly after beginning the search, my team did make two interesting finds, although it remains unclear if either is relevant to the investigation.

The first find consisted of two plastic bottles - bleach and clear ammonia - that had been discarded together next to a dirt trail. On the opposite end of that same trail, another team member found a child size book bag that was blue with a pink heart.

We flagged both discoveries and notified law enforcement of their whereabouts.

Several bones were also found during the search, including a small vertebra but none of them appeared to be human. Regardless, they were all flagged for closer inspection.

The remainder of the search was less productive. Mosquitoes, nats and fire ants could be found throughout the area and no matter how much bug spray we applied it was impossible to keep them off our bodies.

When I returned from the search I spoke with Robert Dummett, one of the search directors with Florida 3 Airboat Search and Rescue. I'll post more about that interview later tonight, along with some video and more photos.

Right now I am off to witness a protest that is supposed to take place in front of the Anthony family home. I have no intention of joining in and am only going in the off chance that Cindy Anthony might choose to make a statement.

Be sure to check back later!

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero : Day 1

I arrived at the Texas EquuSearch command post at about 7:30 a.m. today. Tim Miller gave Investigation Discovery exclusive behind the scenes access and has promised to alert us of any important developments.

I have been assigned to a team of 12 searchers and we are now preparing to go into a high priority area with a K9 team.

As an FYI, a source close to the investigation has told me that ABC has allegedly offered the Anthony family a signifigant amount of money or an exclusive interview. The same source claims that AIM Productions from Nashville has allegedly offered the family money for book and movie rights.

I will continue to post updates throughout the day and will be on the scene at the Anthony home later tonight to cover a scheduled protest.

Caylee Anthony : Ground Zero

My plane landed in Orlando at 11:00 p.m. After getting settled into to my hotel I called Mandy Albritton, the search director for Texas EquuSearch. According to Mandy, things are starting to pick up and they are seeing a lot more people stepping up and volunteering for the search effort.

Mandy also informed me that the command center has moved and is now located at 6317 McCoy Rd., Orlando, FL 32822.

While in route to Florida, I was informed that an anonymous person posted Casey Anthony's $500,000 bond. According to Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, the individual put up the money because they believe Anthony's constitutional rights have been violated.

As a result of these most recent developments, Anthony is expected to be released sometime tomorrow.

I am going to head over to the command center at about 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. I'll continue to update the blog with photos and information throughout the day.

Investigation Discovery to Join Search For Caylee Anthony

September 04, 2008

Investigation DiscoveryIf you have been reading the articles here for the last few days then you are aware that Texas EquuSearch has been having a difficult time getting people to volunteer and help in the search for missing three-year-old Caylee Anthony. Rather than sit back and throw stones at others who are not participating, I decided to take an active role in the search effort.

The Discovery Channel is flying me out to Orlando at 6:00 p.m. today to meet with Tim Miller and his team. I will arrive later tonight and will be joining in the search effort starting tomorrow morning. I will remain in Florida until Tuesday, unless Hurricane Ike decides to keep me longer.

I will be posting regular updates to this blog and will also continue to follow any developments regarding Casey Anthony.

Wish me luck!

Casey Anthony Posts Bail But Remains Behind Bars

Casey AnthonyCasey Anthony, mother of missing 3-year-old Caylee Anthony, has reportedly posted bail for her most recent charges, which include fraudulent use of personal identification, uttering a forged check and petty theft.

It remains unclear why Anthony posted the $3,000 bond, considering she still needs to come up with 10 percent of her original $500,200 bond. Although, there is always the possibility that another Padilla-style deal is in the works.

According to FOX News, Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, was not aware that the bond was going to be posted.

Meanwhile, Casey's parents, George and Cindy Anthony, have met with Mark Nejame, a prominent Orlando attorney. According to Nejame, the Anthony's are not asking for his representation and are only seeking his advice.

I wonder if Nejame was aware that Casey Anthony's bond was being posted?

As a result of the bond, Anthony did not have to appear in court today to answer to her most recent charges.

Chloroform Allegedly Found in Casey Anthony's Car

September 03, 2008

MagnifingglassAccording to several Orlando media outlets, investigators found "suspiciously high" levels of chloroform in Casey Anthony's car. The same sources also allege that a computer, which was removed from the Anthony home, showed that someone had been searching for information on how to use the chemical.

Chloroform is a chemical compound that was once used as an anesthetic. When inhaled, the chemical's vapors cause dizziness and unconsciousness. Today, the chemical is commonly used in DNA extractions, which might explain why it was found in Anthony's vehicle; however it fails to explain why someone was allegedly conducting searches about the chemical on the Anthony's computer.

Investigators have yet to comment on the alleged traces of chloroform or any information that they have recovered from Anthony's computer.

Yes to Mickey Mouse, No to Caylee Anthony

Castlecaylee_2Fifty thousand - That's roughly how many people will visit Walt Disney World today.

Twelve - That's how many people showed up this morning to search for missing 3-year-old Caylee Anthony.

Think about that.

According to Caylee's grandmother, Cindy Anthony, the community is not helping in the search because they do not believe Caylee is dead.

"[The search group] wants to know why thousands of people aren't out helping them look in the woods," Cindy Anthony told CNN's Nancy Grace during a Tuesday interview. "I'm getting phone calls from people saying why they're not out looking in the woods, because they don't believe Caylee is out there. They believe Caylee is alive and that Caylee is with somebody. So that's my reassurance."

As a result of the Orlando community's unwillingness to get involved and the lack of cooperation by Casey Anthony's family, Tim Miller, president and founder of Texas Equusearch, was ready to call it quits today. Luckily, the Orange County Sheriff's Office stepped up and encouraged Miller to keep his team in place.

According to Miller, Sheriff Kevin Beary contacted him this afternoon and personally requested that his team stay in the area and continue to search for Caylee. In an effort to show the departments sincerity, Beary made a $5,000 donation to Texas EquuSearch and also offered the assistance of the departments mounted patrol and their 25 air boats.

"Why do you think he [Beary] doesn't want us to leave this search? He wants Caylee found," Miller told WESH, an NBC affiliate in Orlando. "I would do anything in the world for Cindy and that entire family and we're doing that and trying to find Caylee alive, but if something has happened to her out here, we need to find her. We need to bring this little baby home. She deserves that dignity of having the funeral so everybody can say goodbye and people can put their life back together. Caylee is not where she chose to be."

Leonard_padillaIn related news, bounty hunter Leonard Padilla made headlines again today for comments he made on CNN last night, suggesting that something big is going to happen in the case.

"When the FBI, who has got some of the finest labs in the world, comes back, it is going to shock the world over something Lee, Casey and Cindy have known since Wednesday when they released their preliminary findings," Padilla said. "And also, the Dumpster located a mile and quarter away from the boyfriend Tony's home is going to play a big part in this."

Padilla did not elaborate any further; however earlier today he told FOX 35 that he believes Casey Anthony got the name Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, someone friends say she often referred to as "Zanny the Nanny," from a book. According to Padilla, the book "Double Trouble Squared" features a nanny with the same nickname.

CaseyMeanwhile, the sheriff's office has filed six additional charges against Casey Anthony. According to a department spokesperson, Anthony has been charged with two counts each of fraudulent use of personal identification, uttering a forged check and petty theft. No further details were made available.

Anyone interested in volunteering in the search for Caylee Anthony should go to the EquuSearch command center in the rear parking lot of the Holiday Inn at 5750 TG Lee Blvd., in Orlando.

Caylee Who?

September 02, 2008

Cayleeanthony_2From the beginning of the investigation into Casey Anthony and her missing three-year-old daughter, Caylee, the majority of the media's coverage has been on Casey's latest antics, rather than on her daughter, an innocent child whose body, according to popular opinion, is hidden somewhere along the west coast of Florida.

Given that the time limit has expired for Casey Anthony to accept the limited immunity deal that had been offered to her, it is unlikely that she will provide investigators with any factual information about Caylee's whereabouts. That being said, it is now up to law enforcement to unravel the mystery and to place the pieces of the puzzle together. Unfortunately, that task sounds much easier than it actually is.

The search grid that investigators are dealing with is over 30 miles in diameter and consists of heavily wooded areas, which are mostly swampy, with dense vegetation. As a result, it will take a team of detectives weeks, possibly months to cover the entire area. In the meantime, animal activity, heavy rains, and other seasonal changes will be working against them.

In order to help narrow the search for Caylee, members of a search and recovery team from Texas have been in the Orlando area since Saturday, searching in areas that have been specifically pinpointed by law enforcement officials.

"For a missing child, we usually have around 1,500 volunteers a day," search director Mandy Albritton told Investigation Discovery today. "We are only getting about 200 searchers a day right now, and we probably only have about 50 in the field."

Albritton said she believes that the Orlando community is not coming forward to help in the search because they harbor a lot of ill will toward the Anthony family. In addition to the lack of volunteers, Albritton said that Hurricane Hanna is expected to bring heavy rains to the area, which will hinder efforts to clear specific areas.

"Right now about 30 percent of our search area is under water, and we are going to have to wait until the water recedes to go in and clear that area," Albritton said.  "The big problem we have is this hurricane coming up that is going to probably hit us Friday and bring a lot more water in the area."

Along with the weather, the native creatures, both snakes and alligators, are also making the search a challenge.

"Every time you send a searcher out in these conditions, there is going to be danger," she said. "Safety is of upmost importance and we don't want our searchers to be the story within the story.  Snakes alligators and dehydration are factors we face when we send a crew out.  We try not to work our crews too long. We usually send them out for two to three hours, and then bring them back in to rest."

Albritton admits that there is concern that wildlife, specifically alligators, might have completely destroyed possible evidence, but insists that those concerns are not hindering the search effort.

"We have to be able to say that we have done all we can," she said. "We've brought in horses, sonar, ATVs, and drone aircraft. We keep searching until we have completed each targeted search area. One of the things I keep saying is that we know where she's not."

Volunteers are welcome to show up at the search command center, which is located in the rear parking lot of the Holiday Inn at 5750 TG Lee Blvd., in Orlando.

"This is a search for a baby," Albritton said. "It is not an investigation and it certainly isn't a prosecution. That is up to the sheriff's department and the district attorney. We are just looking to bring a baby home to rest. That is our job."

I urge anyone who can to please take the time to help out in the search for Caylee Anthony. Think about this missing child and keep in mind that no one is immune from a similar tragedy occurring in his or her own family.
