Caylee Anthony Press Conference
August 28, 2008
At about 5:00 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff's Office held a brief press conference to update the media on the status of the case of Casey Anthony and her missing three-year-old daughter, Caylee.
"We continue to receive inquiries in reference to forensic evidence pertaining to the Caylee Anthony investigation recently returned to the Sheriff’s Office," Captain Angelo L. Nieves said. "We once again confirm that we have received and expect to continue to receive forensic results from evidence in that case from at least two forensic laboratories.
"As we have previously stated, because of the sensitivity of this ongoing criminal investigation, we will stay the course and reserve our right to withhold any and all evidentiary details until such details become a matter of public record. We can affirm that every piece of evidence returned on this case is being carefully reviewed by investigators assigned to the case and the Orange/Osceola State Attorney’s Office.
"Our primary objective in this ongoing investigation is to locate Caylee Anthony."
After reading the prepared statement, Nieves accepted questions from the media.
Reporter: "Can you say if any of that new information that came in leads you to believe that the little girl is deceased?"
Nieves: "Again, we continue to review all of the information that we received. It is all preliminary information. As we’ve discussed, we have some results. That information is not subject to discussion. The investigators have a lot of information to look over to make sure they work through that information with the state attorney’s office and make a determination as to the information that we are receiving. Again we still continue to try and look for Caylee and try to locate her.'
Reporter: "Is it still a missing child case?"
Nieves: "We still have a missing child case and we are trying to locate Caylee Anthony."
Reporter: "What is the possibility that you will rearrest Casey Anthony?"
Nieves: "Any information regarding any possible or any future projected arrests that is inappropriate at this point. We are dealing with a child neglect case and any additional information and charges or anything that happens in the future will be determined by the state attorney’s office and depends on the information that’s returned back to us. As I’ve stated, before we continue to review the evidence, the information that we’ve been returned to us is preliminary and we continue to look at that trying to locate Caylee Marie Anthony."
Reporter: "It looks like Casey could go back to jail do you have any comment on that?"
Nieves: "Again, that is part of the process - the bonding process - we don’t have any hand in that. That again is a part of the bail bond process and as well her current corrections monitoring from the corrections division."
Reporter: "Tim Miller and Cindy Anthony were here. What’s the result of that meeting?"
Nieves: "Cindy Anthony has been a regular visitor to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and she continues to interact with investigators and deputies as she has in the past and will continue to do so in order to clarify any information or any details that our lead investigators need her to do so."
Reporter: "Angelo, are you hopeful that Casey might consider taking advantage of this limited immunity deal that’s on the table until Tuesday?"
Nieves: "Again, any information regarding limited immunity, any of the information regarding any of the current activities between her attorney, the orange county state attorney’s office and our investigators, is part of the information that is privy to them and obviously they would be the proper authority to speak on that."
Reporter: "Has Casey been forthcoming with you guys?"
Nieves: "We have not had any contact with Casey. Our investigators continue to make themselves available and offer themselves to the case and to [Jose] Baez, if he has any information that he needs to provide to them."
Reporter: Can you talk to us about the FBI and the DNA test results?
Nieves: "No, we can’t provide any information on details regarding any results or any returns."
Reporter: "In your eyes, the status of your case has not changed as a result of these two lab test results that you have got back?"
Nieves: "We continue to look for Caylee Marie Anthony. Again, this is information that we are working on. Our detectives continue to check to make sure they have all the information together and that they work together with the state attorney’s office in order to evaluate the information that they have received."
Reporter: "Do you have a search on the ground and if so, where?"
Nieves: "We will have a search on the ground when we have determined that it is appropriate to do so, based on the information we receive and on information received by our investigators and lead detectives."
Reporter: "You currently don’t have a search on the ground?"
Nieves: "Any information any leads or any searches that we will conduct are not subject to disclosure because it would hinder the investigation and would be inappropriate at any time."
Reporter: "There’s talk a body being found in the area is there any comment on that?"
Nieves: "That is inappropriate - any discussion like that at this point. We don’t have any search regarding that. What we are currently doing is looking for Caylee Marie Anthony. The results of the preliminary information, we’ll go ahead and continue to review that information and move forward any search, any activity. We continue to look for caylee every day."
Reporter: "One of the allegations is that she’s dead. All of your test results, with all the information given to us, this entire country [is] emailing us and calling us, saying it makes sense to assume, based on what you’ve released to us, that this girl is dead."
Nieves: "Again, one of the things I want to reiterate clearly, is we do not deal in assumptions. We deal in factual information. We will continue to receive that information from the laboratories. The experience, the education, as well as the training from our detectives, as well as lab analysis, and we will continue to move forward methodically and properly in this case."
Reporter: "Is her status, is she is still missing or not missing and presumed dead or just missing?
Nieves: "She is missing and we are trying to locate Caylee Marie Anthony.
Reporter: "Have the DNA results been turned over to the state attorney’s office?"
Nieves: "Any information and any return on DNA or on any information on any results, any laboratory analysis, will be returned to this office. Our detectives, our lead investigators, will then go ahead and make a determination to share that information with the state attorney’s office and discuss that in the coming days and weeks."
Reporter: "Has that happened yet?"
Nieves: "There is no timeline on that."
The press conference was then ended by Nieves.

I am starting to wonder if the LE are not trying to put pressure on Casey by "leaking" DNA results.

I firmly believe Casey killed Caylee in a fit of anger. I believe she was jealous of the relationship Caylee had with her mom, Caylee's Gramma Cindy. I believe Caylee reminds Casey of her mom of which she despises. (Even the photo's of beautiful Caylee look like her gramma Cindy, imo.) This is a truly terrible and tragic case of a spoiled narcissistic sociopathic young adult....gone wild. While my heart aches terribly for Cindy and George (the grandparents)...I think enough coddling of Casey is enough. She belongs back in jail and no visitors , phone calls nor special treatments until she divulges where she buried Caylee so that the child may have a proper burial.
On another note, I recalled in the 400-page investigative report that an acquaintance of Casey took her to a hospital emergency room back in January as Casey suffered a seizure. I think a Cat Scan / MRI should be done. I had a patient who was a completely normal happy and successful family man who overnight became withdrawn and personality changes. They attributed it to depression. Out of the blue this loving father brutally raped a young woman and was imprisoned. Upon his incarceration they discovered he had a terminal brain tumor that caused his personality change and lack of control without empathy. He died in my Emergency room two years later. While it's a long shot...it's one that should be explored. It's just so hard to comprehend that a mother, a human being, could just be so callous without some kind of other motivating factors...other than narcisstic and/or selfish. I would rather find comfort in knowing "she couldn't help it." It's a cruel and sad world that we live in sometimes:(

Put Casey back in jail and let her new friends the inmates take care of her. It wouldn´t be long before they gave her what she deserved. She is in a death penalty state and I hope they don´t waste our tax dollars long, feeding her! God Bless You baby Caylee, your trully an angel now.

Great catch on the "Bella Vita" tatoo. You need to read the lyrics to Lindsay Lohan's song "Beautiful Life" (La Bella Vita). Does anyone know where the tatoo is on Casey?
Beautiful Life (la Bella Vita)
God won't talk to me
I guess she's pretty busy lately
But I like to believe
She's listening
I'm starting to feel all of my bruises imagined, all real
And I'll get through each day
Dip through the bad ones to get to the good ones
Who's keeping score anyway
And this is my beautiful life
But only things sudden is, everything changes
Lows and the highs and all those goodbyes
As hard as it gets, I know it's still amazing
To be alive, it's a beautiful life
I talk in my sleep, that's the one place I know
No one can hear me and I tell myself things
Walk in the shadows, there's always tomorrow
And I'm right where I want to be
And this is my beautiful life
The only things sudden is, everything changes
Lows and the highs and all those goodbyes
As hard as it gets, I know it's still amazing
To be alive
Oh, it hurts while it happening
I wanna feel everything
How can you know till you try
And this is my beautiful life
My beautiful life
The only things sudden is, everything changes
Lows and the highs and all those goodbyes
As hard as it gets, I know it's still amazing
To be alive, it's a beautiful life
It's a beautiful life
It's a beautiful life
It's a beautiful life

What ARE the chances that if Casey keeps quiet about everything (guilty or not), that she'll walk away free with a mistrial?

I did a search on the words of "everyone lies, everyone dies" and found it in the lyrics of the song, About A Girl by Brian Mazzaferri. Its in his album, All Roads Leads to Roads. Reading all the lyrics on that album's songs made me wonder if it wasn't one of Casey's favorites. With this press conference I can now understand why Cindy still believes Caylee is alive. It appears to be still up for debate.

Are you kidding me? Highly unlikely she had a brain tumor. More like party-itis. IF she had a seizure, more likely it was a direct result of overuse of drugs!!!!! This is not a "one time" thing... she was ALL about Casey and the boys and partying. Very selfish.

When officer nieves said they were relying on the training of their officers did he mean the ones who havent &%$#@% casey?

Well, Casey has been arrested again. At 8:35 p.m. this evening two investigators went into the Anthony home for a short time, while a demonstration has been going on out front, and Casey was led out to a black car in handcuffs. Finally, I think they've got her now.
I believe that Caylee either died in the backyard swimming pool, or was left in the car and died of heat exhaustion. I really don't believe that Casey intentionally killed her daughter, but I do believe that she has made it look worse on herself by not immediately telling someone in her family. Instead, she cooked up this wild story about a babysitter stealing her daughter. Isn't that the way, liars always blame others. There is definitely something wrong with someone who takes the actions (or non-action in her case) that she has.
I'm sure that Casey was neglectful of her child and probably had been for quite sometime. She probably stayed out late partying and her daughter decided to go for a swim.
More later....

If Casey continues to say that she is alright and with someone, how do we not know that when she is at the Lawyers office she hasn't talked to Caylee on the phone.
Where is the father of Caylee at? Did I miss that?
The Bail Bondsman should revoke her bail, she has had enough freedom thus far. The police should feed her some truth cerium and get he talking for the well being of the child. Just put it in her beverage that she drinks in jail.
Then no more taxpayers money will be used and the Grandma & Grandpap & Uncle will know the truth. Casey is a down right filthy liar.

The Anthony family sure has some disturbing dynamics. It would appear that these bewildering relationships have gone on for many years. Casey has herself in a mess this time that they won't be able to fix or cover up for her. I find myself being perturbed with her lawyer to some degree. I realize he is there to help her but it almost seems as if he is obstructing the truth. It doesn't look like there is going to be a happy ending but maybe they can at least find the body and find our what happened.

If Caylee drowned in the pool, was left in the car, whatever, 911 should have been called for help. Please tell me how your child dies, you bury that child and party for the next 30 days and continue a normal relationship with a boyfriend as if NOTHING happened. I have been a bartender for 30 years and I just thought I had seen it all. Public hangings ought to be legal. I would travel for this one.

My heart breaks for this little Baby Girl.
I wonder if anyone, surely the police, would have checked to see if any of Caylee's clothes are missing, if her crazy mother packed enough clothes for a month, or was Caylee only wearing the clothes on her back when she left with her. What about her shoes, toothbrush, little underwear and socks pJ's. Are the little pants that were found in the trunk and washed by Cindy, the only clothes item that is missing from her little wardrobe? That should tell them Caylee was dead or missing shortly after leaving there with Casey. Did Casey purchase any clothes or toys for Caylee after they left on June 16th, with money and credit cards or checks she had stolen from her mother or friend - Amy?

I also believe that Caylee is dead and while it is ashame that this is happening , it seems no one close to Casey is talking about the fact that their daughter hasnt said a word. If she was so focused on finding her child she would come out and give information but shes not, and in one of her taped phone calls she said " Alls everyone is worried about is finding Caylee"..then she realizes how it sounded and said " Of course thats my intention also." ??? seems a little conceited. I think shes just trying to buy time by not talking so she can come up with a better "story" as to what happened. I agree with others who said either Caylee drowned or died of heat exhaustion in her mother's car. The ladder being up when the gramma always puts it away is fishy along with the frantic amount of calls to her mother, her house, and her mom's work makes me think it was an accident and she didnt know what to do. But that gives her no right to lie about this.
My heart goes out to The Anthony Family

You know, I've followed this case from the beginning and I've never gone back and forth so much as I have here. Just when I'm sure she's a baby killer, her lawyer jumps on and for about 6 or 7 seconds, he begins to make sense.
I think what did it for me was seeing her demeanor. I think I've seen Casey cry ONE time, and that was in court when they wouldn't reduce her bond. If it were me and my son was missing, I would be kicking, scratching, clawing, and balling to get to my son. I wouldn't sleep, eat or anything. If you haven't heard caseys first phone call home, go and listen to it. It's everywhere. She just doesn't sound like a mother whose child has been missing already for 30 days, yet she's more interested in getting her boyfriends phone number.
If I could say anything to Casey, I would say....... "Casey, if you didn't kill your daughter, then ACT LIKE YOU DIDN'T kill your daughter.

I'm in agreement about her being left in the car. Casey doesn't act like she even cares. If my child went missing, or such, I wouldn't wait 30 minutes, let alone 30 days to call him missing. People would be having a hard time containing me, I'd be looking high and low for him. I agree to let her new prison friends talk to her.
