Is a 17-Year-Old Schoolgirl from Brazil the World's Most Prolific Serial Killer?

August 27, 2009

Gary's BlogResidents of Brazil, a country that is still reeling over the shock of the recent arrest of popular true crime television show host Wallace Souza, who allegedly arranged killings to boost the ratings of a program that already had a massive audience (please see the articles about that bizarre case written by my ID colleague, David Lohr, on Criminal Report Daily), were shocked again when news that an unnamed 17-year-old Sao Paulo schoolgirl—arrested during a Rio Prieto street fight—had confessed last week to killing 30 men by knifing them to death.  Because of the girl's age she cannot be named, nor can any photos of her be released.  Nonetheless, an investigation is currently underway to verify if her confession is true, and so far she has provided elaborate details regarding 11 of the killings.

The teenager was initially arrested following the Rio Prieto street fight on July 6, 2009, but after stewing in jail for awhile she allegedly decided to come forward with the confession about the purported murders because, she told detectives, she wanted to come clean before she turned 18 and could be tried as an adult.  Dressed in a revealing pink sleeveless blouse and denim shorts, the smiling girl told stunned investigators that she began killing men in her hometown, the city of Sao Paulo, for "money, revenge, and to bring justice."

"I don't have enough courage to hold a gun, but I can hold a knife," she said calmly.  "I am confessing because I promised I would do so before becoming 18, to avoid upsetting my family."

Elderly Santa Maria Resident Found Decapitated on Sidewalk

August 26, 2009

Crime SceneFrederick Holgate, 69, a resident of Santa Maria, California, was found dead and partially decapitated at approximately 5:40 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009, on a city sidewalk in the 1300 block of South Miller.  The person who made the gruesome discovery called the police and reported a possible hit-and-run or other driving accident.  He later told officers and reporters how he had found the body.

"I thought the guy was drunk or passed out because his cane was sitting alongside (his body), his hat was down, and so I walked over to him to help him up or call the police and get an ambulance," said the man who found Holgate's body.

Police working the crime scene soon found a hatchet, which they believed to be the murder weapon, several feet from Holgate's body.

"We got a call…around 5:40 a.m. for a possible hit and run driving collision, and our officers got on scene and realized it was actually a homicide," said Lieutenant Dan Ast of the Santa Maria Police Department.

Some two hours later, while crime scene investigators were still working at the scene, the police department received another telephone call.

"We received a call a little later in the morning at a different location where somebody was found to be covered in bloody clothing, and we since have arrested that person," Ast said.

The person turned out to be Nicholas Bendle, 20, who had returned home purportedly covered in blood after having been previously reported missing.  A relative of Bendle's had called the police to Bendle's home.  It was later revealed that Bendle had recently been depressed due to the death of a friend.

People in the typically quiet community, located near California's central coast amid the foothills of Santa Barbara wine country, were naturally pretty shaken up by the bizarre incident and began worrying about their own safety.

"I'm concerned about my girls walking down the street," said one resident.  "I'm concerned about the elderly...this is Santa Maria—it's supposed to be safe."

Apparently Holgate's birthday was coming up the Friday after his death, and his daughter's 21st birthday was on the Tuesday following his death, and they had planned to celebrate both birthdays by going to Disneyland—in part because Holgate had never been to Disneyland before.  Instead, Holgate's daughter—and the rest of her family—spent her birthday, as well as that of her father's, mourning their tragic loss.

Holgate was described as a kind, generous man whose family depended on him for support.

"That man provided for them, and now, he'll never be able to provide for them again," said a family spokesperson.  "We're just going to really miss him.  It really wasn't his time to go."

Dead Baby Covered in Bite Marks

August 25, 2009

Katie FurtawKatie Furtaw, 21, was arrested last Friday, August 21, 2009, and has subsequently been charged with aggravated child abuse after her daughter, four-month-old Ashley Diaz, was rushed to a hospital two weeks ago, on Monday, August 10, 2009, after being found unconscious in her Orlando, Florida home by responding paramedics and police officers.  When Ashley arrived at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital, she was reportedly covered in what appeared to be human bite marks.  She later died at the hospital.

According to reports, Ashley's death—as well as her injuries—were immediately considered suspicious by hospital medical personnel due to what they considered bite marks on her neck, arms and legs, as well as a bruise above one eye.  Later, when police questioned the infant's mother, Katie Furtaw initially told investigators that she was not aware of her child's injuries.

During subsequent interviews with detectives, Furtaw said that she sometimes "nibbled" on Ashley in what she described as a "playful manner," but later admitted that she may have bitten the child harder than she had intended.  Furtaw told the cops that she had not intended to hurt the child.  Later in the interrogation, however, according to an Orlando Police Department report, she began crying and purportedly told investigators that she had bitten the child out of frustration because Ashley would not stop crying.

A relative, who resides in another state, said that "there is no way she (Katie) would have done something like this."  The relative said that Katie had been mentally disabled since her childhood, at which time she had been diagnosed with lead poisoning.  The relative said that Katie interacted well with children.
