He Lost an Eye and Became a Surfing Legend

Dodo Circular

(Guest post by Hudson Hongo from

Like many Hawaiians, Nānākuli loves to surf. Unlike most of them, however, Nānākuli is a cat.

According to owners Alexandra Gomez and Krista Littleton, the cat, nicknamed Kuli, developed his unusual interest in the ocean thanks to his other unique characteristic.

As a rescue kitten, Kuli needed surgery to remove an eye that had become infected. He required regular baths afterward.

"Although he started off life very weak and malnourished, he has grown very quickly into a very tolerant cat and loves the water," Gomez told the Daily Mail. "Probably thanks to the numerous baths he's had while recovering from his operation."

Animal Planet and Alley Cat Allies Bring Cat Vid Fest to Silver Spring

When the Internet Cat Video Festival began in 2012, most of us expected it to be nothing more than small gathering in Minneapolis for cat people to watch their favorite videos. Three years and tens of thousands of fans later, Cat Vid Fest (as most of us know it) is on tour and making a stop near our Animal Planet headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Cats Face Off With Wild Predators (VIDEO)

"Though she be but little, she is fierce!"

William Shakespeare penned those words in his play A Midsummer Night's Dream and they apply perfectly to the cat in the video below, who wasn't too happy with a black bear investigating the back door. The bear was in for a bit of a surprise.

You can read more about this feline-ursine encounter in Alaska on

That wasn't so much the case in this second video though, where a cat faces off against a mountain lion in Boulder, Colorado . . . and doesn't seem particularly phased one way or another.

Oh, cats!

Animal Planet #MEOWS in Austin

By Matthew Windsor, Publicist for Animal Planet

Over the weekend, Animal Planet clawed it’s way to Austin, Texas and left a gigantic sized scratch mark on the SXSW scene with it’s participation in a "paw-some panel," Cat Cash: The Economy of Cats, and with a celebration of all things feline at the Cats Live Here party.

On Saturday, Grace Suriel, social media director of Animal Planet, appeared on the feline themed panel to discuss the network’s role in the global phenomenon that is internet cat videos. Grace mentioned Animal Planet’s dedication to cats on-air runs the gamut from shamelessly cute with the likes of TOO CUTE! KITTENS and LIL BUB’S SPECIAL SPECIAL, to ferociously frightening with MY CAT FROM HELL. In addition, she touted the success of APL L!VES’ Kitten Cam and the network’s role in changing the perception of cat ladies online. Gracel was joined by Scott Stulen, of the Cat Vid Fest, of which Animal Planet is the exclusive sponsor, Will Braden, creator of Henri Le Chat Noir, and Ben Lashes, manager of famous feline’s Nyan Cat, Keyboard Cat and Grumpy Cat, who made a surprise appearance at the panel and sent social media into a frenzy. The panel was also covered by The Guardian, and The Star Online.

#CatCash Fever at SXSW

If you were on Twitter Saturday night, you may have stumbled upon some #CatCash -- a trending topic that exploded out of our event at South By Southwest.

We were proud to be part of a panel at SXSW called Cat Cash: The Economy of Internet Cat Videos with our very own Social Media Director, Grace Suriel, as well as our pals Ben Lashes (Manager of Grumpy Cat, Nyan Cat, Keyboard Cat and others), Scott Stulen (Curator of the Internet Cat Video Festival) and Will Braden (Creator of Henri Le Chat Noir).

The idea was to take a seriously fun look at how Internet "cat-lebrities" have inked movie deals, inspiried touring festivals and generally made money. You know this is real when folks like Shark Tank's Mark Cuban visit backstage.

Here are some of our favorite moments and quotes as captured in the medium across the Twitterverse. As you'll see, surprise guest Grumpy Cat pretty much stole the show:

Want to see more? Check out this scrapbook on And get's in-depth coverage of the panel and the phenomenon.

Animal Planet staffers with Jackson Galaxy and representatives from the Walker Art Center at Animal Planet's SXSW happy hour.

It’s not the internet without cats, right? So you can’t possibly have the largest interactive festival in the country without a few, too. That’s why Animal Planet, in conjunction with the Walker Art Center, originator of the Internet Cat Video Festival, presented “The Cats Live Here” happy hour this week at South by Southwest.

The goal? To highlight the best of internet cat videos –and bring some cat-loving, cocktail drinking folks together for one [my-cat-from]-hell of a night. Guest appearances by Jackson Galaxy, host of Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell,” and musician Emily Bell rounded out an evening filled with some of the most famous cat videos of all time, including the “Henri” series (below), Maru and one of the oldest internet cat video legends, Keyboard Cat.

Here's what Jackson had to say:
