Rescuing Horses: Just Another Day at Animal Planet
By: Betty Chu
Victoria Lowell, SVP of Marketing at Animal Planet, is passionate about horses and talks about volunteering at a horse rescue on Discover Your Impact Day, a global day of volunteerism for all of Discovery Communications. Over 3,300 employees around the world participated in projects in their communities.
Meet Black Jack ... isn't he adorable? You would never guess he is blind especially the way he can zero in on a treat! It's easy to forget he can't see because he is so at ease in his world. Thanks to the efforts of Horsenet Horse Rescue in Mt. Airy, Md., Black Jack and his other blind pasture buddies have a happy, safe home for life.

Last Friday, I volunteered along with several of my favorite Animal Planet colleagues at Horsenet Rescue as part of Discovery Communication’s Impact Day. We unloaded 450 bales of hay, repaired and painted fences and scooped poop from paddocks ... loving every stinking minute of it! I also fell in love with a little pony named Harry ... so who knows where that will lead!

Working on a farm is not my day job -- marketing and promotions for Animal Planet keep me in the office, but I do spend most of my free time working with horses. There are a lot of horses in need of our help. Whether you adopt a horse, sponsor or even dedicate a few hours of your time at a local rescue, you can make a difference. Horses are a lot of work but they give back in so many ways. If you would like to volunteer at a horse rescue or explore adopting or sponsoring a horse go to animalplanet.com/roar or if you are in the Maryland area check out horsenethorserescue.org. We could use your help! I hope to see you at the farm!

I think it's awesome what you do. Horses are a very beautiful animal. Thank you for rescuing them.

Thank you Vicki for all the kind words and thanks to all of Discovery Channel for coming out for the THIRD year now :) We love having you. Black Jack and Gallahad (the white one) have been pals for years as they trudged the streets of Baltimore pulling a vegetable cart. Back when we got them BJ had a little sight...he was Gally's "seeing eye pony" but we don't think BJ has much left in those eyes of his. He is the sweetest pony ever and his pal Gally is sweet too. Just gotta really keep an eye on Gally when it's eating time. He sure doesn't like to share :) Thank you again Discovery Channel for everything you did for us. We hope you keep coming back.
If your readers don't live in Maryland, they are still welcome to sponsor one of our guys. Just visit HNHR.org and click on the sponsorship page and then you have the job of picking your own special horse to help out.
