Diver Nearly Swallowed by a Whale

05/22/2014

A wildlife cinematographer nearly became the real-life version of the Biblical Jonah when a nearly 50 foot long Bryde's whale almost swallowed him whole.

He was recording footage of great schools of sardines off the coast of South Africa that are fed upon by a wide variety of predators from sharks, to sea birds to dolphins.  Suddenly, out of nowhere, the behemoth shot up from the depths mouth agape.

Watch the video to see what happened.  Amazing!

I particularly love how all of the other predators clear out seconds before the whale appears! You can read more about this awesome natural phenomenon in this article on sardines and their predators in National Wildlife magazine.

What would you do if you saw this coming straight for you?
