First Footage of Live Giant Squid

01/09/2013

Holy Kraken, this is exciting news!  Researchers have gotten the first footage ever of a live giant squid in its deep-sea habitat.

So far, the species is only known from bodies of these behemoths that have washed ashore, tentacles that have been found in the bellies of sperm whales, and a live but hooked specimen videotaped on the surface, but no one has ever witnessed this creature in its normal habitat deep beneath the surface.

Here's a CNN clip with more information on the squid and the footage, which will air on the Discovery Channel show Curiosity. I'll post updates here when the footage becomes available.
