Slow Motion Chipmunk

09/16/2011

My National Wildlife Federation colleague Anne Cissel just posted a great entry to our blog Wildlife Promise (which, in addition to Animal Oddities, you should follow and read daily!) entitled 10 Amazing Slow-Motion Animal Videos

Chipmunk Cleans Himself YOUTUBE Anne did all the hard work of hunting down these amazing videos, each of which shows animals (including sharks, mosquitoes, frogs, and owls, among others) doing their thing, just in slow motion. You can head over to Wildlife Promise to see the entire post with all the videos but I wanted to share with you my favorite one which shows an adorable chipmunk cleaning  himself.

It's amazing to me how simply slowing real life down can reveal just how bizarre and amazing animal behavior is and also how much we take that amazingness for granted in our busy, frenetic lives.

You don't have to use slow motion to observe and appreciate the animals all around us.  In fact, this weekend you should turn off you computer, silence your cell phone and head out to the nearest patch of nature and simply look, listen and smell the world around you.

You might be surprised at the amazing diversity of wildlife that share our neighborhoods.  And if you're lucky, you might be witness to some strangely fascinating wildlife behavior.
