Kazoo Birds

02/03/2010

Some animals make really strange sounds.  One of them is the wedge-tailed shearwater.  These sea birds literally sound like a kazoo.  And when you get a whole flock of them vocalizing together, it's a bizarre-sounding experience.

You can read one researcher's field report from an island in the Indian Ocean where wedge-tailed shearwaters breed, complete with a recording of these "kazoo birds" in action, right here.

VIDEO: Check out this video of a researcher rescuing a wedge-tailed shearwater from a hole and hear the bird's kazoo-like vocalization.
