Big Cat Sighting in Britain?
08/10/2009
Many people claim that there are large, wild cats elusively roaming remote places of the British Isles. Since no big cats are native there, such animals would either be escaped captive animals (or the offspring of escapees that are now breeding in the wild) or a completely undescribed species.
Recently, some video footage was taken of what appears to be a large, black cat emerging from the brush and walking along some railroad tracks. When I first saw stills from the video, I was sure it was just a housecat. But after watching the video and learning that the railroad tracks are just over 4 feet across, allowing me to use scale to get a better sense of the size of this animal, it seems way too big to be a housecat. It's definitely not a dog. Could it be the mysterious British big cat?

Interesting...might be some kind of hybrid like the Savannah cats.

I think this is a large housecat. Sorry to disapoint but the reason is this. If you compare the size of the fence in the foreground with that of the spacing of the two tracks as a reference- it's not big enough to be a panther type animal. Distance shots are always so hard to guage. The critical thing that is happening here in Ohio involves points of reference of known sizes. We have had sightings of a group of dogs chasing this cat- of which the cat is comparable in size to a large retriever, and a sighting next to a backyard grill placing the animal at three feet at the shoulder. It is imperative to get a view where there are known objects. Best of luck!
