Meet David Mizejewski
05/10/2009
David Mizejewski has been fascinated by our natural world for as long as he can remember. A lifelong naturalist, he spent his youth romping in the woods, fields and wetlands, observing and learning about the surprising diversity of wildlife that inhabits these areas. He holds a degree in Human and Natural Ecology from Emory University and is an expert on wildlife, our environment and green lifestyles. David is dedicated to using his knowledge and his infectious enthusiasm to help others understand the wonders of the natural world and how to live sustainably.
David is a media personality, author, blogger and a naturalist with the National Wildlife Federation. He hosted and co-produced Backyard Habitat on Animal Planet, a television series airing from 2005-2008 that showed people how to transform their yards and gardens into thriving habitats for birds and other local wildlife. David also appeared in an Animal Planet mini-series in April of 2007 called Springwatch U.S.A. that looked at the effect seasonal change has on wildlife from salamanders and flying squirrels to great horned owls and black bears. He blogs about animal oddities for Animal Planet and Huffington Post and contributes to NWF’s blog Wildlife Promise.
David makes monthly appearances on NBC’s Today Show and is a regular guest on The Martha Stewart Show and ABC’s Good Morning America. He has also appeared on The Wendy Williams Show, Access Hollywood Live, BET’s The Mo’Nique Show, Planet Green’s Renovation Nation; HGTV’s Gardening by the Yard and Curb Appeal; Sundance Channel’s Big Ideas for a Small Planet; Fox’s Mike and Juliet and America’s Newsroom, NBC’s iVillage Live; and CNN’s Headline News and Larry King Live. David has also appeared in and provided voice-over for dozens of educational and advocacy videos, PSAs and DVD extras produced by both National Wildlife Federation and Walden Media for the feature films Hoot, Nim’s Island, and The Chronicles of Narnia. He has participated as a wildlife expert in the press events for the films Where the Wild Things Are and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole.
David also does numerous radio appearances and has been a guest on NPR’s Marketplace, The Diane Rehm Show and All Things Considered, Martha Stewart and Rosie O’Donnell Sirius Radio shows, and dozens of major market radio stations on programming running the gamut from morning commute shows to evening news to weekend talk formats.
David is the author of Attracting Birds, Butterflies and Other Backyard Wildlife, published in 2004 by Creative Homeowner and winner of the 2005 Publisher’s Marketing Association Benjamin Franklin Award. He is also a contributor to Gardening How-To magazine, published by the National Home Gardening Club and a Contributing Editor to Birds and Blooms magazine.
David is a graduate and board member of Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders, an exclusive, two-year leadership training, networking and mentoring program. He was one of twenty young conservationists to be nominated and selected for the inaugural class of this competitive program in 2005. He joined the board in 2008. David has also sat on advisory groups for the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign, Biodiversity Council, Alliance for Workplace Excellence, OurEarth.org and Mother Earth News magazine.
He has been interviewed and profiled in many print publications, including Entertainment Weekly, Out, Best Life, Sunset, Organic Gardening, National Wildlife and Newsweek magazines as well as The New York Times, USA Today, The Chicago Tribune, The Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post, as well as by the Associated Press and Reuters. He is a regular speaker at environmental conferences and events, both on the national and local level.
Originally from New Jersey, David now lives in Washington, DC.

thought you would like to see some video I shot in Kenya this past May. You can see it at www.youtbue.com/petts1. Just personal vids, not making money on views or anything. Just trying to share our love for Africa's wildlife. Enjoy!

David,
I think it is great and you are lucky to do what you do. In high school I worked at a wildlife park . I studied alot of animals. I wasn't lucky enough to go and get a 4 yr degree. Instead I went for a 2 yr technical degree. I still love animals ,and do not get if we are such a threat ,then why do so many people feel the need to populate the earth. Also I hate the fact that so many people get a pet just so it can lay around for the persons individual needs. I love zoos but feel that the animals aren't really happy. But I guess it's better than the species becoming extinct. Take care, and sorry we lost a great friend in Steve Irwin. good luck but be safe. Animals are still wild and . well you know Ed

I think it's amazing what you do. I have a cat at home that was born on 9/11/01 without eyes as well as many other disabilities, but with understanding and love he's the most amazing addition in our family!

is it weird for a ferret and a cat to be best friends

I think it is great to be able to see, and work with, so many different animals from all over the world. It is interesting how we learn about new species and new things about known animals.
As I was watching an episode of "Weird, True, & Freaky", on Animal Planet, they were talking about a rare white fawn. In the central region of New York State, white deer are not that rare. We have them in herds, and some are often seen grazing across the road from the Horseheads Town Hall and in other areas north of Horseheads. There is even a website called, Seneca White Deer (http://www.senecawhitedeer.org/home.php). As a naturalist, I thought you might be interested in this.

I am not sure who to contact, but I found conjoined toads by my pool about a week ago. I have pictures of them. I just found a set of conjoined tree frogs that are joined in the same manner as the toads I found. I am pretty sure that this is not very common. I wondered if anyone would be interested in looking into this.

Thanks David. I am an ethologist... a student of animal behaviour...saw a wicked number of animals inhabiting every unimaginable niche while I was in zoology laboratories... impossible to keep up... I always wonder how many new species have evolved since I was born... I suspect more new species than ever there was in this brief history of time.
Salut,

I remember watching you on Backyard Habitat. It was an awsome show. Wish I could see you on more shows. You really inspire people to help with widlife. I have bird feeders all over our yard, butterfly bushes and flowers to attract bees all because of watching your show and being a member of National Wildlife and Defenders of Wildlife.
