Bo Obama Not a Hypoallergenic Dog After All?

Bo Obama Portuguese Water Dog Goldendoodle? Achoo! Labradoodle? Achoo! Portuguese Water Dog? Achoo!?

A new report issued from the American Journal of Rhinology & Allergy indicates that there may be no such thing as a low-allergy or allergy-free dog. The report is based upon findings from a study indicating that quantities of dog allergens in homes with supposedly hypoallergenic breeds are no different from those in homes with dogs widely considered non-hypoallergenic.

Even President Obama limited his search for a new family puppy to the hypoallergenic variety and settled upon Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog- a breed known to be low-allergy. While some dogs do indeed shed less than others, all dogs have dander and saliva which will impact the susceptible allergy sufferer.

"Homes with a hypoallergenic dog were no less likely to have detectable levels of dog allergen or to have lower average levels of allergen than homes with a non-hypoallergenic breed", according to Charlotte Nicholas, MPH, of Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, and colleagues.

So what is an allergy sufferer to do? Washing your pet often, eliminating carpets, using HEPA air filters, and vacuuming frequently definitely helps!
