Secret Video and Photos Show Rare Rhinos Making a Comeback

Photos snapped by camera traps and footage from motion-activated video cameras recently revealed rare Javan rhinos and their calves, proof that the critically endangered species is breeding. The Javan rhino is possibly the rarest creature on Earth, with a known population of only about 40.

The news is a boost for conservationists in Indonesia, giving them renewed hope for the survival of this species on the brink of extinction.
“This is fantastic news because, before these camera trap images surfaced, only 12 other Javan rhino births were recorded in the past decade,” said Adhi Hariyadi, who leads WWF-Indonesia’s Ujung Kulon Program.
Javan rhinos are threatened by poaching, human encroachment, disease and natural disasters like tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.
